How's this for a plot device for an apocalyptic story?

The coronavirus somehow figures out how to spread through digital networks, thus bypassing all of our social distancing strategies.

Like, reverse engineering a 3d printer.

The virus figures out a way to jump from physical to virtual, and back and forth.

I bet there's already a movie like that, right? (The Matrix?)

Would be fun to try to write a short story based upon that idea. You could get it published. There are plenty of magazines, print and online sho pay a few hundreds for a good short story.
