Grace Fusco mother of 11, grandmother of 27 would sit in the same pew at church each Sunday, surrounded by nearly a dozen members of her sprawling Italian-American family. Sunday dinners drew an even larger crowd to her home in central New Jersey.
Now, her close-knit clan is united anew by unspeakable grief: Mrs. Fusco, 73, died on Wednesday night after contracting the coronavirus hours after her son died from the virus and five days after her daughters death, a relative said.
Four other children who contracted coronavirus remain hospitalized, three of them in critical condition, the relative, Roseann Paradiso Fodera, said.
Mrs. Fuscos eldest child, Rita Fusco-Jackson, 55, of Freehold, N.J., died Friday; after her death, the family learned she had contracted the virus. Her eldest son, Carmine Fusco, of Bath, Pa., died on Wednesday, said Ms. Paradiso Fodera, the familys lawyer who is Mrs. Fuscos cousin and is serving as a spokeswoman..........................

(5,124 posts)to the fallen. They are not just victims of coronavirus. They are somebody's mom, brother, sister, daughter, husband, etc. I get the feeling that some people still don't get it. Some may never get it, but perhaps putting their stories and faces out there may make a difference so we all work harder to protect each other. AND NEVER FORGET THE FAILURE OF THIS ADMINISTRATION.

(4,787 posts)Except for Mrs. Fuscos age, none of them were in any risk group, at least as far as they know right now.
Props to the family who, despite their grief, have requested that autopsies be performed, to look for any clues as to why the disease progressed so rapidly and was so deadly in this cluster.
How awful.

(9,353 posts)It is amazing that it was so virulent and had such a rapid progression in this one family.
Particularly nasty mutation?

(14,492 posts)Our condolences go out to their survivors and their friends.
This triggers some emotions in me especially, as my 73 YO wife died last fall and the bottom line result was she had a rare (and unknown to us) genetic twist from birth which caused her to have a fatal reaction to some drugs given her in the hospital for a kidney problem. She would have normally recovered from that problem had it not been for the reaction.
Now, we're trying to get all of her siblings and our kids to be tested for that genetic oddity so they are aware and forewarned for any future health problems they may have.
This makes me curious if something similar to that could have happened here. I truly hope the autopsies are very thorough and find the cause. This is a brand-new virus to science and we'll be learning much more about it as time passes.
