We could be back on our feet in a month or month and half if they just mass test, isolate the sick, hunker down a week or two and clean our environments.

That seems a whole lot cheaper and easier than crashing the economy for 2 - 5 months !!!

then the CDC sent tests throughput the country that were faulty
Then the FDA and CDC delayed labs getting approved for their own tests

During that time the virus flourished

To your point the Trump admin didnt think testing was needed they were focused on containment at the borders. They were not focused on planning and mitigation. They fired the pandemic teams and threw Obamas pandemic disaster plans away

Singapore has under 300 cases, but zero deaths, because they have a rigorous process in place for handling any epidemic that lands in their country: Massive testing of the population, immediate hospitalization for anyone testing positive, quarantine for anyone exposed to a sick person but not testing positive, required social distancing. And they don't fuck around with following through on any of it and enforcing it.

It's draconian in some ways, but it works.

One of the most important things the federal government does is monitor the world for threats against the country. And when those threats are identified, come up with a plan to deal with said threat. Because Trump had dismantled the pandemic response team, even when the threat was identified, the experts weren't in place to come up with a plan.

Trump hedged on the virus not making it into this country and spreading. Essentially, he hoped we would get lucky. He made it political.

He gambled with our country and lost. Taking stupid risks and losing is how he operates.
