Juliette Kayyem: Like 9/11? This is worse than Bush and the flashing red lights before 9/11

Like 9/11? This is worse than Bush and the flashing red lights before 9/11. Bush was guilty of nonfeasance, of just not paying attention. Trump, who was briefed of the coming pandemic, affirmatively told public the opposite. That's malfeasance of a biblical order. @cnn @NewDay

U.S. intelligence agencies were issuing ominous, classified warnings in January and February about the global danger posed by the coronavirus while Trump and lawmakers played down the threat and failed to take action that might have slowed the spread

From the same article:

<snip>

The president was, fitting the seriousness of the occasion, so far opposite the truth that he accidentally came around to accuracy again. If the media were treating the outbreak fairly, Donald Trump would not be able to stand at the presidential lectern and talk about how prepared he’d made sure America was without someone shoving him aside to hold up a picture of a dying nursing home patient, or to read a plea from doctors who don’t have enough masks. The only questions to ask him are: Why are you still here? And how many more people are going to be dead before you leave?

Yesterday's WH news conference was so outrageous that I took to twitter and tweeted this out to every WH reporter I was following:

One of you needs to bite the bullet and have a "Shep Smith / Anderson Cooper on the bridge" moment! NOW!

It didn't happen.

Bin Ladin Determined To Strike in US was the title of the President's Daily Brief prepared by the Central Intelligence Agency and given to U.S. President George W. Bush on Monday, August 6, 2001. The brief warned, 36 days before the September 11 attacks, of terrorism threats from Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda, including "patterns of suspicious activity in this country consistent with preparations for a hijacking" of US aircraft.

Ashcroft Flying High

JULY 26, 2001 / 7:04 PM / CBS

Fishing rod in hand, Attorney General John Ashcroft left on a weekend trip to Missouri Thursday afternoon aboard a chartered government jet, reports CBS News Correspondent Jim Stewart.

In response to inquiries from CBS News over why Ashcroft was traveling exclusively by leased jet aircraft instead of commercial airlines, the Justice Department cited what it called a "threat assessment" by the FBI, and said Ashcroft has been advised to travel only by private jet for the remainder of his term.

"There was a threat assessment and there are guidelines. He is acting under the guidelines," an FBI spokesman said. Neither the FBI nor the Justice Department, however, would identify what the threat was, when it was detected or who made it.

Others might not know that Bush was briefed, also.
