We’re Not Taking Any More of Romney’s Lies: Chicago Teachers’ Strike Edition

Romney demonstrates a stunning lack of curiosity about the real issues, and is too quick to demonize teachers merely because his party is trying to kill unions. But then, Mitt Romney has already told a closed door fundraiser (without leaks from closed to the press events, we would know nothing of Romney’s “ideas”) that we don’t need no stinking Department of Education, but since he can’t tell us he wants to get rid of it all together without raising the alarm as he did in 1994, instead:

“The Department of Education: I will either consolidate with another agency, or perhaps make it a heck of a lot smaller. I’m not going to get rid of it entirely,” Romney said, explaining that part of his reasoning behind preserving the agency was to maintain a federal role in pushing back against teachers’ unions.

You might be wondering why there’s no reference to Romney’s deathblow to education. Well, that little tidbit is one of those “specifics” the campaign tells you not to worry about. They’re going to debate those issues in Congress. But there are nearly $1 trillion in cuts to programs like education, air traffic control and food safety in the Ryan budget under “Function 920 Allowances”. http://campaignstops.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/09/09/edsall-the-ryan-sinkhole/?emc=eta1&fb_source=message Well, hey, that money has to come from somewhere and they sure as heck aren’t going to tax a millionaire to get it.

So while it appears that Romney shows zero judgement in these situations, quickly inserting himself with conflated charges from yesteryear attached to this President today, what’s really going on is a long-armed agenda to destroy and dismantle the Department of Education, one goal of which is to kill teachers unions. If you think that’s a conspiracy theory, I urge you to read all of his words from the overheard fundraiser.

Mitt Romney's Caution On Department Of Education Owed To '94 Campaign Ad
The caution could be owed to the fact that Romney simply favors massive reductions over outright elimination. But the more popular theory is that it's political. Romney has candidly admitted that he's keeping his plans for eliminating government agencies secret so that they don't come back to haunt him in the general election. As he told the fundraising crowd on Sunday, he's still smarting from the ad Ted Kennedy ran against him in the 1994 Senate race, which homed in on Romney's call to eliminate the Department of Education.

...

That this spot would stick with Romney 18 years later -- even in, what are supposed to be, private moments -- underscores how greatly the Massachusetts Republican has been shaped by his previous political experiences. But if Romney was hoping to buffer himself from attacks by stopping short of calling for the Department of Education's elimination, he underestimated the reaction to his position.

"If all he wants to do is use the Department of Education to go after unions -- then he’s clearly not interested in using it to help kids," Randi Weingarten, the president of the American Federation of Teachers said in a statement. "How does it help kids when Romney wants to use the federal government to undermine teachers and their unions? Romney is out of touch. He doesn't get it."

I'm just talking about education in this OP, but Romney also wants to attack HUD and other federal agencies, by either eliminating them or downsizing them. He's not coming out in public right now, because as he fully admits that was politically damaging to him back in 1994 when running against Ted Kennedy, but yet he will tell all his financial donors at a private fundraiser in April.

Please make sure people are aware of his positions on this, our kids education is too important.

the Republicans could best get their grubby hands on to begin eliminating all unions. Nevermind that it will be the students, our future leaders, who would also be getting harmed in this slimy political tactic.
