entitled to any respect!
I have just listened to her explain the proposal to evaluate EVERY DAMN COUNTY IN EVERY STATE IN THE COUNTRY and designate each either low, medium or high risk for Corona virus with DIFFERENT LEVELS OF "SOCIAL DISTANCING" for each different county! And, this is so "some" of the country can return to work by Easter! What in hell could go wrong? This would be a lengthy and near impossible task for a competent administration and this one is run by a man who can't find his ass with either hand who wants it done before Easter!
And, this is what now passes for intelligence? This is a "respected physician"?
This proposal is nothing more than a transparent fig leaf to cover for Trump's INSANE insistence on "getting back to work" by Easter. Those proposing it are shameless whores and those who defend it are idiots!
Everything---and everyone---Trump touches turns to shit.

I can't imagine how testing this limited could inform much of anything about the distribution within counties in a state. In addition, I think it is almost guaranteed that testing per capita varies widely across counties, and that even the criteria for testing varies, making a valid comparison just about impossible.
Magical thinking. Just llike DT. After all the colossal failures that blocked testing efforts, she thinks states will magically have nice, comparable, testing data.

8-10 months IF EVERYONE BUT first responders were to be in "lockdown" (police, fire, medical, military) this includes support staff in lockdown as well.
16-20 months if we continue with the current social distancing, unemployment/employment, local government shutdown, minimum workforce, etc.
I'm seeing a pattern here, anywho, I just pulled these numbers out of my butt, no way to know for certain, but 300 Million dead worldwide wouldn't be out of the possibilities. 18 months and counting to a viable vaccine, another 2-4 months to distribute, if the vaccine is manufactured before deemed viable.
22-24 months... damn... I would not want to be president right now.
pat_k
(9,313 posts)As far as "estimate of length of time for our shelter in place if there's 100% compliance" I'll take a shot at a thought experiment for a "best case" scenario.
In Iceland, they tested 5000 asymptomatic people and got 48 positives -- about 1%. If we assumed that, right now, 1% of Americans are infected, that would be 3.3 million cases in the US right now. Let's assume all those cases are at some point in a roughly 3 week cycle (from incubating to symptomatic to recovery or death).
The latest estimate for mortality rate I've seen is 1.5%. If 1.5% of the 3.3 million died, that's about 50,000 deaths over the next two or three weeks. If, somehow, there was zero spread from the 3.3 million to anyone else, that would be it. Of course, that's impossible. However, if a significant proportion of those people don't infect anyone else because of all the precautions, the "next wave" would be smaller. If a significant proportion of that second wave didn't infect anyone else because of precautions, the third wave is smaller, and the fourth wave smaller yet.
Throughout the four cycles (12 weeks or so) we can assume the number of tests per day would continue to increase and systems of reporting would be much improved. We can also assume we'll have a test for antibodies at some point (a way to identify people who are immune who can safely stop "sheltering" ). With far more widespread testing, we would have a far better idea of incidence by region/metro area. I think with those things in place, and a reduced number of infected people, things could perhaps start getting back to normal in many regions, with more targeted containment efforts to keep the virus from spreading out of control. And who knows, at some point we might even have a "rapid home test" people could take at home before going out to work, or where ever. That would be a game changer.
This little thought experiment is undoubtedly very unrealistic, but I thought I'd give it a shot. Tragically, even with this "best case" scenario for getting it under control, the death toll would be awful -- at least 100,000 over the 12 weeks, with continued losses, depending on how long until the end of the downward side of the curve.

These results are also indicated by a testing survey carried on an entire Italian town of Vo (population 3,300), where the results showed that more than 50% of all cases are asymptomatic.

I've been tracking WA, NY, CA, and MN. Their numbers are most up to date. As for the numbers for the other states. They are mainly from this VOX article with numbers as of yesterday. (There are a few I was able to update based on today's news.)
I can dig up links if you like, but here's a quick summary of where the WA, NY, CA, and MN numbers are from:
WA data is the Seattle Times coronavirus daily update (firewall open during crisis) also on their DOH site. I take whichever appears newer.
NY is harder to find, but I found an article that reported they've done more than 100,000 tests as of today (pop about 19.5 million).
MN reports it's numbers on their DOH site.
CA is tough to find but based that estimate on a recent article.
LAS14

Unfortunately, the table for the US doesn't include the per capita numbers by state.
Cases per 1M for a some selected countries below -- as of 12:40 PT 3/27.
On the site, you can sort by the column to see full "ranking"
I wish a tests per million column were included to report the figure, if available. This would give something to inform accuracy/inaccuracy of the numbers. I assume we are way down the list due to such limited testing.
Cases per 1 million
...
Switzerland 1,365
Italy 1333
Spain 1236
...
Austria 767
Norway 622
Belgium 538
Germany 524
France 447
Netherlands 434

USA 259

S.Korea 182
...
UK 172
...
Australia 123
...
China 57
Deaths per million
Italy 136
Spain 93
...
USA 4
Once again, likely a consequence of limited testing and/or "broken" reporting systems. While tests were incredibly limited, admissions with COVID-19-like symptoms were treated as if they were COVID-19 positive with status never confirmed after death, so they weren't counted as COVID-19 deaths. In addition, many states have very "broken" reporting systems, so cases have gone unreported. (According to one quote CA system is still "100% broken" )

It provides great testing numbers -- positive, negative, pending, along with hospitalized, and deaths. It grades the quality of the data, which is wonderful.
It also provides links to numbers over time so you can see the changes, as well as links to best sources of information for each state.
And you can download as spreadsheet, so you can easily add data, like pop, and calculations.

(2,574 posts)our numbers are way too LOW, because we have zero count of asymptomatic. For instance, no one without a fever has been eligible for testing. Results from other countries are showing that not everyone has a fever. She is not making a decision without the data--that is smart, and it is transparent. She knows that numbers don't lie.
I believe that people are tested if they die. For instance, the first case near us was a man having a cardiac incident. They tested him, the cause of his death was COVID-19, even though the presenting event was the heart problem.
Now--an interesting report came through from Italy today about people who are dying of other causes because they were unable to be treated in facilities that were using all staff and resources for COVID-19 patients. The question is asked, "Are these actually deaths caused by COVID-19?" Again, the importance of data.

Based on your post, I forced myself to watch her part of today's press conference. (also part of Pence and all of Dr. Fauci.)
She discussed counties where the virus is concentrated and using contact tracing and surveillance to track transmission to other counties. She is fully aware of travel between counties. She also responded to a question on the topic from a reporter, about highly responsible behavior between counties. This has been true in my state--other counties with zero incidence have instituted quarantines for those who've visited mine, which has the highest rate in the state. This is the same recommended/requested two week quarantine for anyone who's traveled internationally. This is cautious, preventative, and makes perfect sense.
She also focused on asymptomatic cases. We haven't had adequate testing of symptomatic cases, but we've had zero testing of asymptomatic cases. Until we have data, our analysis is weak. She makes a good point on this. I hear her saying that she thinks there are MORE, not FEWER cases than we think. (This would decrease the proportion of cases/deaths.)
Pence said that the "president's" desire to open up the country will be made based on data. She is slowing him down from acting without it.
Dr. Fauci has also explained (in his interview with Science published over the weekend) how the task force meets and goes over what they're going to say before the event. I trust him to politely disagree with her if she started pulling us off in the wild and crazy direction of the so-called-president.
Second question for you: What else are you thinking she could do?
Atticus
(15,124 posts)Lulu KC
(2,574 posts)This isn't about defending HER, it's about information.
1. Where did you hear her say this about the counties?
2. What do you want her to do instead?
I am not challenging your opinion--I just want to know where you're hearing her say what you mentioned. It wasn't in the press conference, so where was it?
Based on what I have read, I don't think we'll be out of this for 18 months. There is no way that we can return to "normal" by Easter. If anything, we might have partial restrictions lifted by late June or July, where we get to go do more than we are now, but we will be sent back home about a month later as the virus recirculates. This cycle will happen repeatedly until we can test antibodies and vaccinate.
Based on what I've heard her say, she's driven by data like an actual scientist. If she is, and if she has influence, we won't be anywhere close to unlocked by Easter. The states and local jurisdictions won't let it happen, even if DT would. Now, will he listen to her or anyone else with common sense? Unlikely.

We are on I-5, the interstate highway that runs the entire length of the west coast. We are already being inundated by travelers from congested areas such as the Bay Area who seem to think that our sparse population makes us a perfectly safe destination.
Ours is a very large county with a population of only about 45,000. Some around here have suggested that we should be allowed to live under looser restrictions.
Those of us who are paying attention want nothing to do with looser restrictions, and simply want everyone that travels to pass us by and keep going. We already have one illness at a gas station, which was possibly the result of an infected traveler.

(12,600 posts)This will allow Fat Donnie to hold a map of the U.S. and claim that more than 3/4 of the country is at low risk because of him.
This will mirror what he did after the 2016 election, when he kept showing a map which was nearly all red because of large states with smaller populations. What the map actually showed was how much land area he won.
Expect the same scam if his low-medium-high risk policy is put into place.

(586 posts)will be designated high risk!
Even if they are able to designate those districts, they're going to change quickly!! The virus has the ability to move quickly into other areas, are they going to be able to update these counties every day, every hour or every minute?

Not everyone can make that decision.

(12,600 posts)The result will be a map of the U.S. with large areas of "low risk" color (probably green) and very small areas that are "high risk" (red). Then Trump can hold it up and show all the green area, and claim he has made most of the country low risk.
Imagine this map from the 2016 election, only with green instead of red.
That's what I predict will happen. With Fat Donnie, it's not the truth, it's the show.
