The claim: Sunlight kills the new coronavirusAn article on a holistic health blog that has been circulating Facebook tells people to go outside to prevent catching the new coronavirus because sunlight kills it.
In my opinion, keeping the beaches closed and having people quarantined inside their homes is a bad decision. Getting more sunshine is a proactive step we can all take at protecting ourselves from the current coronavirus outbreak, wrote David Friedman, the author of the blog post. Instead of staying quarantined inside your house, go outside on your back deck and soak up some virus destroying sunshine!"
The claim has been shared elsewhere. Similar posts of graphics offering tips have spread throughout social media.

What experts say: The suns UV light cannot kill the coronavirus and concentrated UV light should not be used to kill the virus.

If the UV intensity of sunlight were enough to kill viruses, there'd be almost no viruses!
And, we'd be a much different, smaller population wearing white from head to toe every day the sky is clear.

(16,937 posts)why, our Dear Leader said when it gets warm in a couple of weeks it would be all gone!
And he should know - even the doctors all around him were amazed at how much he knew!
*Please, if there is some troll out there reading this and will state it as proof that IQ45 was correct, I'm adding this thingie here for you:
Also, troll, if you don't understand what that is because it is one of those "fancy" words, you know, like quid pro quo, it means that I REALLY believe that IQ45 is truly as dumb as a rock and anybody that believes him is just about the same.

(14,732 posts)has a "cool" normal temperature of 88 degrees F. So much for 'the warm weather kills the virus"

(35,356 posts)But you have to look at the regression to see the correlation.
There are warmer places with higher infection rates than cooler places, and vice-versa. It's not until you look at a range of data and crunch the numbers that there's a correlation. It's not 1.0, but it seems to be there for a large sample. Like anything else statistical, what applies to the sample may not hold true for the relation between any two points in the data.

It will take a great bit of teamwork to get rid of him - thank you guys/gals for your input and support.
Let's go TEAM - I'm in - HE'S GONE!!!!!
Well, that will only work if we GET OUT THE VOTE!!!!

(35,356 posts)Not the wimpy UV that gets to us through the atmosphere. (Even then, it wouldn't be instantaneous. It structured protein + RNA, not a vampire.)
There are countries using UVC for sterilization, but for that you want protective clothing and goggles. It works great. (They divide the UV subspectrum into different slices. UVA, not just horrible, fair amount of it from the Sun. UVB is nastier, more ageing and more cancer-inducing. UVC is pretty well blocked, and is nasty stuff.)
On the other hand, it's not like going outside on your back deck is a bad thing.
