Massive sales of next-gen iPhone could boost U.S. GDP (iPhone 5 Announcement Tomorrow)

A research note released by J.P. Morgan on Monday estimated that sales of Apple's next-generation iPhone may add between one quarter and one half a percentage point to fourth quarter annualized U.S. gross domestic product growth in 2012.

According to the firm's chief U.S. economist Michael Feroli, estimated domestic sales of the so-called iPhone 5 will be about 8 million units in quarter four, not including purchases of carry-over phones like the iPhone 4S.

Feroli goes through the calculations that arrived at the relatively large GDP contribution: by finding the difference between an assigned retail price of $600 per handset, similar to past launches, and an imported cost component of $200 per phone, a $400 per iPhone trade margin can be applied to the GDP.

"Thus, calculated using the so-called retail control method, sales of iPhone 5 could boost Q4 GDP by $3.2 billion, or $12.8 billion at an annual rate," Feroli writes. "This would boost annualized GDP growth in Q4 by 0.33%-point."

Yep. Unlike Androids, iPhones keep their value. We've had three each at a total cost of about $75. onehandle Sep 2012 #8

I've got an Iphone 3 that came free with the plan, I never would have bought one but what is the rush to get the latest phone?? I don't get it, the phone does what I need it to do and it works in Europe, unless they offer another free phone, I'll keep this one until the un-replacable battery dies (great feature Apple) although I think there's a kit to replace it but it voids the warranty but it's already expired.

I still remember people waiting in line at midnight for Windows 95 and the same thing for whatever Iproduct Apple comes up with. Are people's time that worthless to them that they waste it for things like this?

The only time I waited for something was in college. I was always either the first or second in line, there's nothing more fun that having the one class you need full. Of course this was over 30 years ago.

I sold my first iPhone for $150 more than I paid for it.

I've already arranged to sell both of our iPhone 4s.

The secondary market makes the iPhones pretty much free, in the long run.

Now the usage plans, ouch. But the phones, if you keep them safe, are a good deal.
