Particularly when testing was so "rationed" that hospitals were treating admissions with COVID-19-like systems as "presumed positive." If they never verified positive or not after death, the death was not counted.

And who knows how many deaths very early on that were attributed to flu were actually COVID-19?

I don't know if we will ever know the real toll this virus took between about 2/1 and about 3/15 (when testing in most places was ramping up -- but even around 3/15, availability of tests continued to be severely limited in many places.
