Mitt, your running mate isn't really inspiring confidence.

A fallback plan of a safe seat. It didn't inspire confidence then, either. But any VP from the House will always have this problem, senators only 1/3 of the time. I think the timing should have been a strike against choosing Lieberman.

As you know, a good candidate named Rob Zerban is vying for Paul Ryan's seat in Wisconsin. Zerban is just the sort of figure the Dems need -- a small business owner and a clean-cut family man who has pledged to support Social Security and Medicare. He's not a stiff, not a hack, and not an extremist.

Initial polling indicates that Zerban stands a decent chance of prevailing, if he can raise enough money to get the message out.

John Edwards was a slug, but at least he went all-in on his VP bid when Kerry tapped him as his running mate.

Seriously, guys, when your running mate campaigns for a DIFFERENT OFFICE you know your bid is a lost cause.

as Kerry's VP choice. Edwards decided not to run for Senate around the time he decided to run for President.

The closer analogy is Joe Biden, who stayed in the race for reelection to the Senate while he was running for VP. Biden for the most part did not actively campaign for the Senate seat, which differentiates himself from what Ryan apparently is doing.

Its an interesting move by Ryan in that it opens him to ridicule. Moreover, he probably doesn't face a serious risk of losing the House seat. He's won it six time and the lowest total he's gotten is 57 percent (and that was his first campaign). Even though his district went for Obama over McCain in 2008, Ryan still managed to get over 60 percent of the vote last year.

In the end it will be interesting to see if the ads are really that specifically House-seat oriented or whether they are a bit more ambiguous. He has a pretty big warchest (over $5 million on hand) compared to Rob Zerban, his Democratic opponent (who has around $1.5 million on hand).
