Donald Trump is preparing to encourage Americans to wear face coverings, the latest effort to curb the spread of the coronavirus, according to three individuals with knowledge of the planned announcement.
Trump's planned guidance which two officials said is imminent but not yet finalized would encourage Americans to use homemade coverings, like cloth masks, scarves or bandannas, when outside the home. Health experts believe that the practice, which is common in nations like Singapore and Japan but unusual in the United States, would reduce the risk of individuals not exhibiting symptoms spreading the disease.
A senior White House official confirmed the planned guidance, but said it would be targeted to Americans in places where the virus is being actively spread and would not apply to everyone. The policy will not be announced on Thursday, the official said.
Officials have spent days debating the planned recommendation, worried about the risk of sending mixed messages on public health, draining health workers' supplies and giving Americans a false sense of security. Experts have cautioned that homemade masks are insufficient to protect the wearer from contracting the coronavirus.

(100,103 posts)I'm curious here. It helps prevent the spread. We can't buy them now, so either people will make them or use ones they already have.
This won't impact supply beyond black market ridiculously over priced ones which will never end up in the hands of healthcare workers anyway.

(100,103 posts)I refuse to accept it as "the new normal". I hate that we have to do all of this, but that is just me. I just feel like it pushes the light at the end of the tunnel back further and further. I want to know that there will be life after COVID.

(9,894 posts)The hysteria, the changing rules, the utter incompetence at the federal level... Its horrible. The President has no control over the situation, the CDC is unreliable, and the experts are saying what they have to say to get the President to act like some imitation of somebody who might have a clue. Were up a creek without a paddle.

(100,103 posts)Like we have to disinfect every surface of everything that we bring into our house? We have to wear homemade masks? We have to spray lemon-scented disinfectant spray everywhere? Sometimes I wonder if someone is screwing with us, or we just plain don't know how this thing is transmitted, which is why we have to keep second-guessing everything.
It's no mistake that there's a massive disinformation campaign about the virus out there, and in the day and age of fake news, it's hard to tell truth from reality. I'm reminded of the 30 Rock episode where Jenna is researching for a bio picture about Janis Joplin, and the writers keep editing Wikipedia as a way to mess with her, and then she can't tell real from fiction. I feel like we're living in that episode right now.

(19,568 posts)I've made face masks, and I wear mine. I'm in a community spread area and I think it's commonsense.
I don't need no stinking guidelines from his dumbass. We can't buy any right now, and unless you make them you have none. So, this means nothing for health workers supply.

(7,813 posts)It was just said on Rachel: a cloth mask reduces the spray from you as you speak. It protects others from your possible infection. That makes sense. The more people who wear masks to protect others, the better.
However....
DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES WEAR ANYTHING COVERING YOUR FACE IN A BANK, CREDIT UNION, OR SOME SUCH.
The second any employee sees that, he or she will immediately hit the alarm and security procedures are in process. The best I can advise is to lower the mask as you enter the bank, show your entire face to the cameras, and not raise it until you have to speak. Explain to the employee what you are doing and why.
I was a bank teller for 9 years. We don't take these things lightly.
