Why Memphis Fast Food Employees Went on Strike: One Woman's Story

[link:https://www.memphisflyer.com/NewsBlog/archives/2020/04/03/why-one-memphis-fast-food-employee-went-on-strike-this-week|

Fast food workers with Fight for $15 and a Union in Memphis joined about 100 others earlier this week from St. Louis and Tampa in a strike to protest against unsafe working conditions amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

Tiffany Lowe, an employee at a local Kentucky Fried Chicken, participated in this week’s strike, saying that the current working conditions and lack of protection for workers is “sickening.”

Employees from McDonald’s, Checkers, and Burger King in the three cities also joined the strike.

“Since we are essential workers, we figured that was the way to get people’s attention,” Lowe said. “I’m frustrated, angry, and confused as to why a multi-billion dollar corporation such as KFC wouldn’t give us the things we need to survive like hazard pay, healthcare, and paid sick leave. I mean if they want to call us essential employees then they should make us feel essential, treat us like human beings, and give us what we deserve.”

I'm orig from Chicago burbs & only have been here a couple of years.

How are things in your area now? Are people isolating? Not so much here.😔

I've been hunkered down for about a month. 👍

We are on a state-wide shelter-at-home for a couple of weeks now. I work at an HMO close to my house and am considered essential, so have been working as usual for now. I had to run to the pharmacy this morning and everyone was wearing a mask. I don't go out without one, even to walk the dog. We've been hit hard despite the precautions.

I bet Memphis was a real culture shock after Chicago! How are you adjusting

BTW, we had a Sheltie while I was growing up. She was such a sweet dog.

Lots of homeless fur kids & I fear it will get worse with so many losing their jobs.

Empty the Shelters event by BISSELL Pet Foundation

Thanks to BISSELL Pet Foundation (BPF), on April 29 more than 2000 pets are expected to find loving, forever homes. The Grand Rapids-based non-profit will pay all adoption fees at 66 shelters and rescue organizations and will thank families for choosing adoption with the gift of an AdoptBox™.

Families that choose adoption on April 29 will only be responsible for licensing fees, which vary by county from $7 to $12. BISSELL Pet Foundation will take care of all adoption fees, which average $150 for dogs and $60 for cats.
