Propublica: One Reason Caregivers Are Wearing Trash Bags: A U.S. Firm Had to Recall 9 Million Surgic

Cardinal Health withdrew the gowns just before the pandemic because a Chinese supplier failed to sterilize them properly. The recall has created what a hospital association official called a “ripple effect.”

There’s an overlooked reason why hospitals treating COVID-19 patients are so short of protective gear. In January, just before the pandemic hit the United States, a key distributor recalled more than 9 million gowns produced by a Chinese supplier because they had not been properly sterilized.

“At this time, we cannot provide sterility assurances with respect to the gowns or the packs containing the gowns because of the potential for cross-contamination,” Cardinal Health wrote to customers on Jan. 15. It added, “We recognize the criticality of our gowns and procedure packs to performing surgeries, and we apologize for the challenges this supply disruption will cause.”

I wonder if it was contaminated with the Coronavirus. Just wondering.

If it was improperly sterilize in China, that would be of crucial concern if the hospital gown was used in a surgical ward settling.

But under this Coronavirus pandemic if the disposable plastic hospital gown was not properly and absolutely sterile from the production facilities in China the gowns use to protect the healthcare worker in an ICU setting is of limited concern of it is not
certifiably and totally sterile.

Did those hospital gowns get recalled and trashed without need or justifiable reason because someone over reacted and this gross over reaction was the cause and basis for the current shortage of this PPE.

Domino Effect,.. where the chain of production and distribution failed and it negatively impacted the system and rendered it dysfunctional.

The national security of a country can be put at risk and under unexpected or unanticipated jeopardy if overseas cheaper costs of production come back and bite you - out sourced production might not be the cats meow when that cat comes back around and someday bites a chunk out of your ass, inflicting a nasty wound.

we should reconsider bringing back medical supplies production to the US. It is highly automated. As we enter economic depression, one way to crate jobs is to force wealthiest corporations to do that. Start moving supply chains out China. Have Apple build some of its products here. How is it we can’t get hand sanitizer? There is no lack of ethanol production in the US or anywhere really. We need to diversify our economy away from stock market speculation.
