How long until sports can return? You might not like the answer.

As fields, arenas and stadiums sit vacant and silent, the desire for sports to return far exceeds the capacity among those who oversee them to determine when they will. Assessing probability is futile, but public health leaders indicate that fans and leagues should prepare for sports to remain absent not just for the coming months but into next year.

The NFL, for instance, would still make plenty of money from TV revenue alone....as long as they are playing.

They get $0 from the networks if there aren't any games to show.

That's why it wouldn't surprise me at all to see games played in empty stadiums.

But, I still think there will be a point where professional sports are played in empty stadiums.

It won't matter if you like it, or if I like it.

I think that's how it's going to play out. Let's see what happens.

Until the medical professionals are unquestionably well supplied with the testing; equipment & PPE; I’m not willing to support the amount of supplies that would be required to operate a safe; healthy sports organization.

I’m sorry; it would probably be a substantial moral booster to the general public; however it’s not an essential function of society either...

Keeping the public and medical professionals safe and healthy is priority one at the moment.

if there was never another football game or boxing match. We put way too much value on athletes and games. When I worked at a major university, I was around the athletes to know that, as a group. I don't like them.

We should also think about kids sports, which are so important for socialization for so many kids.

There are also many kids and families that have worked sports into their longer-term plans about college - extremely talented kids who have busted their asses just as much as the kids who dedicate themselves to academics, and a lot of these kids dedicate themselves to both sports and academics. High school sports are done for the season; college sports may not start up. Club teams are shuttered. There are kids who have worked hard for ten years to be at the top of their classes for softball, soccer, swimming, wrestling, whatever.

So do the whole, "Pfft, sports," dance all you like, y'all, but this is another smaller tragedy unfolding. What do you tell a kid who practiced everyday, who put in the effort for close to a decade of their young lives, and sees the goal disappear?

All the other bouncing balls and pucks, not so much.

I enjoy reading the daily standings, stats and tables, but I do have some terrific literary materials on vintage baseball and boxing; it’s possible to be spirited to another time/place when buried in those books.

I’ll live sportless just fine.

community. Everything's cancelled, of course, with refunds and credits, storage of purchased supplies ongoing. But she was talking yesterday of the possibility of starting up "in the fall," at least they're officially keeping the door open. (The fall would actually start in August.)

Regardless of whether we have a hot-weather lull, it'll be very strange if COVID isn't continuing its devastation next fall-winter. Identification of those who should have become immune should help some get back to work who have jobs open, but major disruption will continue until vaccination is widespread.

On a happier note, strictly speaking public and private swimming pools maintaining proper chemical levels can be safe for use. Chlorine destroys the virus.

sports would be writ large. The whole sports industry is an obscene example of insanely rich people profiting off the bored and easily impressed masses.

Billionaires own sports franchises to profit off of wage earners. Millionaire athletes entertain the masses to reap
money beyond imagining. Sports venues profit from top to bottom. The cities that built these sports temples to celebrate greed and do so by short changing their citizens and depriving them of necessary public services by transferring the average taxpayer's wealth upward to further enrich the already bizarro wealthy class.

If I should never see another sports events I won't be missing a thing.
