I was just watching my recording of Joy Reid's Sunday broadcast. She interviewed Jeremy Howard who wrote an article for The Guardian about wearing masks right now and Dr. Ashish Jha of the Harvard Global Health Institute who appears daily on MSNBC to talk about cv19.
Jeremy Howard pointed out several things. The Chinese have figured out that wearing a two layered cotton mask with a piece of paper towel inserted in between the layers can impede the virus from being transmitted because paper towels are so similar to surgical mask material. Conversation is now recognized as the main way that cv19 is being transmitted. Modelling suggests that if 80% of communities wears masks outdoors, "we can actually kill this virus".
So if no HEPA filters are available, the paper towel rectangle slipped into a mask pocket is efficient because of how similar it is to surgical mask material, Howard advised. I'm encouraged by this because until the HEPA filters I purchased via eBay arrive I feel confident to wear a mask with paper toweling inserted if I make an Rx pickup.
I'm sewing masks with open pockets so filter inserts and nose wires can be refreshed.
We've observed that none of our out & about Lakewood, Colorado neighbors are wearing masks. Not even the kids. When I picked up groceries at a local King Soopers last week I saw only one man wearing a mask as he walked through the busy parking lot.

(22,133 posts)rated at a '10', the highest grade in removing contaminates from the air), I wondered if I cleaned, that this could be used as a means of protection. The paper towel is an interesting angle, I had wondered if some paper goods could be used, but usually paper is not porous enough to breath through.
In STLMO, more and more are wearing masks. A couple of weeks ago, I'd say that the ratio was perhaps 1 in 7 or 8 people were wearing masks, perhaps a little less. My SO said that more people seem to be wearing masks (I haven't been out of the house), a noticeable thing to him, so perhaps a good thing (not perfect), but all it will take to get to the 100% mark I'm sure is, unfortunately, a high illness/death rate from CV.

(22,133 posts)which I do hang onto, they do seem to be better than a regular paper towel.
Thanks again, be careful and safe!

I swear, I'm doing more shopping now than ever.

(7,572 posts)I finally located some locally and are being mailed to me. I'm just not experienced with this product. I plan to sew some masks and use these inside. I know they recommend washing the masks often, maybe every day, if worn all day, but wondered about how the insert towels should be treated - either just washed with the mask or replaced.

(5,641 posts)I figure I'll get 2 or 3 filters per sheet, so a box of 200 sheet nets me 400-600 filters. Good enough for me.
I'm only going out when needed, so trips are few and far between. Plus I just watched a video on making a whole mask from the shop towels and it looks interesting.

(46,166 posts)I'm not a med professional or a scientist. But I would never use a filter that has already been in use anywhere.
And some filters out there contain fiberglass. There may be other contents that are dangerous to be breathing through. Research and erring on the side of caution is key.
I watched the video of the ER doctor whose wife created a mask for him using HEPA vacuum cleaner filters for her mask materials. Those are selling out now online. But I also found instructions for using Filtrete F1 HEPA air filters and am waiting for that order to arrive.
Good luck but be cautious. Howard didn't mention a paper towel brand.

(22,133 posts)(one per furnace, I got two of them), and use the highest grade possible (normally is a '10', but last time around, I picked up some graded a '12'!). I always get the highest ranked filters because I do have dogs too, so these help in keeping dust down.
I saw that video too, where the wife of the good doctor shows us how to make the filters, a very good video. You're right, I suspect that the HEPA vacuum cleaner filters are going to be gone before long, if not already.
Perhaps this will give the vacuum cleaner companies a new business line, e.g. pre-cut sized mask inserts, or masks themselves.
Be safe and thanks.

(46,166 posts)Be sure that they have a filter insert pocket. And if you think you need a nose wire, they can tell you if they can make you one like that. I tweaked an online pattern so that my masks have an open pocket so the nose wire can be removed to swap out for a new one. We're going to use pipe cleaners for wires. Twist ties work, too, if they're long enough.
Shop around for a decent price. Some are way too pricey and some seem spot on to me.

(29,674 posts)But entire groups are making masks free, at cost or with donation. Some groups promise to use the same pattern and often make them in pairs: one to sell and one to donate. I've noticed many of the members are self quarantined and are doing it to keep busy.

Filtrete doesn't advise or encourage that their filters be used for masks. So the paper toweling sounds like a cautious choice.

(13,787 posts)At least the HVAC filters were designed to process the air you breathe.
The paper towels might be perfectly safe to breathe through, although I am curious as to how much dust from the manufacturing process remains in/on the towels.

(46,166 posts)I just found a DU thread from yesterday on this mask insert topic. One poster advised that micro fiber cleaning towels work like the hydro knit towels. I've asked if they could let me know how they became aware of this.
Seems to me that microfibers wouldn't have the added concern of dust. And they're a popular cleaning supply that so many already have on hand. They also hold up in my Extra-hot water Sanitize + Steam washing machine setting that takes over 2 hours to complete. Microfibers are the Timex watch of cleaning towels.

is there an online youtube video or pattern that you are specifically using? I would like to try my hand at making a mask with a pocket and nose wires but I am only a beginner sewer and the patterns I looked at seemed too complicated.
thanks

(46,166 posts)I made two small changes
-Where she top stitched along the top of the fold for the filter pocket - I also top stitched right above that along the pocket of the nose wire. In other words, along both edges of the opening for the filter insert.
-She inserted a nose wire and then enclosed it by stitching along the whole pocket to seal it in. I left an opening in the middle of that pocket instead so it can be swapped out. I treated it just like she did for the filter insert pocket.
These two tweaks are easy to understand once you view her video. Btw, I slowed down the video speed in the Settings so I could understand her process. It's nice because there's no talking and everything she does is clearly captured in view. I did have to watch it a few times slowing it down if I got confused.
The top image is the front. The bottom is the back or inside showing the top stitched pockets.
PM me if you have any questions at all. She also has a video for a mask with fabric ties and no cutting the tie pieces on the bias!

(21,889 posts)good idea to slow it down and watch bits at a time while you are making it.

(46,166 posts)Once I had a loose idea of how she made the mask I could dive in. But I had my phone open to the video, too. After one mask I'm super confident about making these.
I'm going to make the side bias tape tubes slightly wider to make it easier to get the elastic pulled inside. I also hand stitched the elastic with a few quick stitches to make the circle. I've also have eyelet pliers and small eyelets to join the ends of the elastic. If that works it'll speed up the process. But the hand stitching was easier than fiddling at the sewing machine.
One last thing, I didn't think I wanted elastic around the ears. But this mask is surprisingly comfortable with good face coverage. I had already cut out her mask with the fabric ties. But husband asked for this one so I made it first. Now, it's the one I'll always make until I get bored.

(23,550 posts)ones that we put over our procedure masks. We are allowed 1 procedure mask a week with one back up if it gets too nasty and one homemade mask we can wash from time to time.
Our homemade masks are only allowed to be the pattern from the video you posted.

And I'm thrilled that this version is so easy to complete.
