Representative Adam Schiff condemned Donald Trump's decision to fire the Inspector General of the Intelligence Community Michael Atkinson, warning that the president was "gutting the independence of the intelligence community."
Schiff, a California Democrat who chairs the House Intelligence Committee, strongly criticized Trump in a recent interview with MSNBC. The congressman warned that the president was "retaliating" against perceived enemies and placing "cronies" to lead oversight, all while the nation is reeling from the coronavirus pandemic.
"It is a real threat to the independence of the intelligence community," Schiff argued, listing all the people from the intelligence community that have been fired or have resigned under Trump's presidency. "So he's decapitating the leadership of the intelligence community in the middle of a national crisis. It's unconscionable," he said.
Tweeting a clip of the interview Saturday, Schiff wrote: "In the midst of a global pandemic, with thousands of Americans dying, what is Trump doing? Retaliating against perceived enemies. Putting cronies in charge of oversight. And gutting the independence of the intelligence community. All to hide the truth. He will not succeed."

(12,712 posts)That pretty much sums it up.
It may cause a cognitive dissonance to think of the President as a threat to this country and our democracy, but that's what we have right now and that dissonance can resolve when you look beyond the facade he presents and start to see a bigger, more precise picture of what we are dealing with here.
Yes, it IS happening here. His personality is just the kind that can represent such a detrimental threat to an entire county and that's what we have to deal with as a fact. We will not and cannot be safe until any power he has been given to him as a holder of that office is vanquished, removed and he is incapable of acting out his ulterior motives.
