I saw a story about St. John the Baptist parish in Louisiana and started checking with family. My great aunt's nursing home (Southeast Louisiana Veterans Home) is featured in the story. We're not able to get information if she's one of the 7 deceased or one of the 18 others that tested positive. She's 91, so we don't have high hopes. Additionally, I've got two aunts and an uncle about 15-20 miles away in Kenner and Metairie. All are diabetic, in poor health, and over 65. I was able to get a hold of two of them today, not doing any worse than usual. The third... he's running a fever and his blood sugar is testing over 600 (high enough his monitor can't read it). No one can go over to check on him because of the fever.
My dad is worried he's about to lose 3 siblings and we're not going to be able to go to their funerals. He's an absolute mess but I'm taking care of him. I'm at a loss y'all. Watch out for the ones you love.

(111,276 posts)but you should be able to be present at a closed casket graveside ceremony.
I'm so sorry this is happening. Just because they've become too much for family to care for with multiple medical needs doesn't mean we want to lose them.
Just don't write them all off yet. The death rate for people over 80 is 14%. There is an outside chance they can beat this thing.

(210 posts)The family crypt is in Metairie Cemetery in New Orleans. It looks like we may be able to attend the interment, but are required to stay in the cars. The other problem, the one noone wants to think about, is all four are supposed to be buried in the family crypt. An above ground crypt. Normally, you have to wait 6 months between interments. It may be 18 months before we're able to bury them if they all pass.

(111,276 posts)With a closed casket, I can't see any reason to hold people in cars., but they don't let old nurses make the rules. It's just so sad for your dad that he even has to think this way. There is little enough chance to say goodbye as it is.

(26,294 posts)I would have him go to the hospital he can and get checked out quickly and if it's a cold that's okay but those blood sugar levels are not okay so my recommendation would be to look into an insulin pump along with a continuous glucose monitor.
There are currently two that I know of on the market that will link together with their own system one is the tslim X2 which links with the Dexcom G6 the other is the Medtronic system which needs what's medtronic's glucose monitor.
The other good thing is if he has Medicare and if Medicare will agree to pay for the pump they might pay for the insulin as well if he has Medicare Part D.
Currently I'm using the T slim X2 with the Dexcom G6 and it has gotten my A1C down to 6.3 from the high 7's to the mid 8's.
