Yes, the failures are incredible and inexcusable. And yes, thousands and thousands of lives could have been saved with faster action. However, raw numbers are meaningless. Any comparison to other nations must be on a per capita basis.

You mean, like this?

"The US now has about 62 deaths per million people. Meanwhile, according to Johns Hopkins University data, Hong Kong, Japan, and Taiwan all have less than 1 death per million; and China, South Korea and Singapore have each under 5 deaths per million."

Whichever way you want to look at the numbers (or discount or trivialize them) it is damn pathetic for an advanced, first world country!

(But then, maybe America isn't advanced, or first world?)

Trump failed. Worse, he stopped others from doing their jobs effectively in response to the virus.

By the way:
Your 'raw numbers are meaningless' is wrong.
They are significant, especially if one of those is you or someone you know.
It's just for comparison across countries, per capita numbers are more significant.

The fact that these arguments are repeatedly brought up is so bizarre, since the data at per capita are just as bad for Trump, as I laid out in this OP: https://www.democraticunderground.com/100213271921

Strangely, USA news coverage of the recent Australia bushfire crisis was extensive, but little recognition that Australia has one of the world's lowest per capital rates of infections and deaths. I am unable to provide the John Hopkins or other chart links, but here's the basic data: National population approximately 25 million; COVID-19 positive 6,350; deaths 61.

This is due to early travel restrictions, high testing rates and strict shelter-in-place enforcements which were initiated by both the federal and state governments (half of which are Labor Party governments) acting in concert with minor variations among the states and local councils.

There were some destructive incidents regarding admissions of Aussies returning on virus infected cruise ships which the mainstream news has excoriated. This frightened our conservative coalition federal government to take the advice of their health experts against the lobbying by Rupert Murdoch's television 24 hour propaganda channel (recently available on commercial television as well as its original pay-tv outlet) and other right wing stakeholders. A massive bipartisan financial assistance package for workers and businesses has been passed by the federal parliament.

In other words, Australia's response to the pandemic has been more like California's than Florida's.
Contrast the Aussies with diabolical Trump, and it's no enigma why thousands more Americans will die unnecessarily as well as being financially damaged.

To open biz/government based on science and health outcomes, not the twitter feed of the infantile tRump.

Standing up to his idiocy is the only way forward to save more lives.
