while we lament the absence of a president's competence, let's also remember the power of a speech

we've all been wistful for what might have been if we had a president like obama or hillary during this crisis, for the calm, deliberate, rational leadership they would have provided.

either of them would have done a great job pulling together experts, getting on top of all the facts, laying out a vision for how we get through this, and effectively communicating the nuts and bolts of the new reality.

but let's also remember that any other president would have recognized that this was a moment the nation needed to come together, even if we're physically apart. even shrub, a weak president and a not the brightest bulb, understood that in the immediate aftermath of 9/11 (well, a few days later, but still), the country needed its president to make a speech unifying us, letting us know that our partisan differences fade away when we are faced with something of this magnitude.

hillary would have given a great speech, obama would have given a truly amazing speech, even most republicans would have at least known what the situation called for an delivered something along those lines, as shrub did in 2001.

donnie, instead, looks at this moment and demands that we all praise him and stop asking him nasty questions. even while he seems to recognize that this is an epic re-branding opportunity, he can't bring himself to say the simple and obvious thing: united we stand; we're all in this together; we're one country, united; from many, one; we are the *united* states of america; whatever, take your pick.

politics 101, really. but donnie's so incapable of making the obvious speech he doesn't even try.
