Obama was going to support the nominee whoever it was, but waiting until after Bernie endorsed Biden is a smart move by the party. Obama doing it before Sanders did would have looked to some Sanders supporters like the establishment picked Biden. With Sanders already on board, the is more of a unifying endorsement.
