7 crew members aboard hospital ship Mercy test positive for coronavirus

Seven crew members aboard the USNS Mercy hospital ship docked at the port of Los Angeles have tested positive for coronavirus, according to the Navy.

The medical treatment facility crew members are in isolation off the ship, said Navy spokesperson Cmdr. John Fage. Everyone believed to have been in close contact with those crew members remain in quarantine off the ship; all have tested negative for the coronavirus.

The outbreak will not affect the Mercy's ability to receive patients, Fage said.

"The ship is following protocols and taking every precaution to ensure the health and safety of all crewmembers and patients on board," Fage said.

The close quarters on ships make it almost impossible to maintain social distancing.

I think we'll find out that the Navy is rife with the disease very soon.
