New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts are 4 of the biggest donor states.
Don't forget about California, Washington and Oregon! California is the 5th biggest economy in the world.

(56,828 posts)in terms of getting money back from the federal government vs what it pays in.
Connecticut is by far the worst, getting back 74 cents for every dollar. NJ, Mass and NY are the only other states that get less than 90 cents per dollar back, with 82 to 86 cents

(8,067 posts)often come with open violence, whether from police and military, or semi-official goons and death squads. It's difficult trying to speak out when someone is smashing your face with a brick, or if you think your family might be targeted late one night.
Not that this doesn't happen here. We all know about violence against people of color and gay people and people with disabilities, some of us have had personal experience. But when it becomes the policy of the state to treat any and all dissent that way, "entrenched hopelessness" can become a matter of personal survival.
This makes the relative gutlessness of so much of our media so galling. Journalists in places like Saudi Arabia and Russia risk their lives on a daily basis, wishing they had our protections.
Maybe yesterday was a turning point. If so, it's about time--in fact it's four years too late. It might be that the White House press corps now have actual skin in the game--they and their families are at risk along with the rest of us.
We shall see.

(8,054 posts)by both media and citizens, where there is still truly not much penalty or downside to it (yet), sort of surprises me. It really does feel like we've gotten used to open corruption and we accept it now with a shrug--no knocks on the door in the middle of the night required to make us submit.

(889 posts)and, with a sweet innocent voice and bright cheerful demeanor, inform them that "democrat" is a noun and they're using it as an adjective, which is something most Americans learn in primary school grammar. I further suggest the possibility that they might want to repeat those grades or otherwise review that material.

(21,481 posts)governors' conference of yesterday afternoon. Cuomo hosted a regional conference for the governors of CT, NJ, RI, PA, and NY. The focus was how to safely and gradually loosen the shut downs that these regional governors had worked out between themselves. Jobs and schools cross state lines, plus people cross state lines to go to bars, restaurants, etc. So governors in the northeast region worked out cooperative agreements in closing down and social distancing.
It is natural, then, that they would arrange agreements on when and how to reopen businesses and schools. Each governor took questions from media for their state.
Trump apparently feels threatened by this cooperation between neighboring states. All the governors did was inform their constituents on what they are doing and why. But Trump's paranoia couldn't deal with it. He is such a freakin' snowflake.

(3,836 posts)Gotta say that I find the the word "Democrat" when used as an adjective
to be highly offensive. Mainly because republicons have used it for years to infer that Democrats (I'm using the term as a noun here) are 'rats'. They mean it to insult us, even the bogus president uses it. So folks on DU should be aware of this and stop using the term in an offensive way. Most of us are progressives, yes? But even if not, there is no excuse for it.
I remember that both Joy & Rachael have cautioned a few of their guests about using this term, in this way, on their shows.
I have noticed this before in way too many posts here on DU. Please do NOT use 'Democrat' as an adjective, it should be 'Democratic"
Democratic Senator, not Democrat Senator
Democratic Party, not Democrat Party
Democratic House, not Democrat House
Democratic Speaker, not Democrat Speaker
Of course there are some exceptions, so this is just a general rule of respect and
I could be wrong, of course, but I had to say something this time - it's just my two cents..
