He's not incompetent. He would be if he were just making mistake after mistake while trying to get something done. This person is deliberately fucking things up, thinking only of himself, refusing to listen, and showing absolutely no feelings for the nation he's supposed to be leading.
In my book, that's not incompetence -- it's just being a fucking prick.

(12,712 posts)He could be said to be a cunning, conniving, devious dictator. That's his MO, personality and agenda. He is a confidence man in the fullest sense of the term. He plays everyone and uses a persona that functions as a ruse.
I think that says it all and he is not good for a democracy, let alone a civilization. Trump is like a virus or a malignant cancer to this land.

(1,603 posts)is the inability to perform specific tasks to a minimal acceptable standard. This can be due to lack of knowledge, but can also be due to temperamental issues, the inability to delegate (micromanagement) or lacking the mental focus necessary to complete those tasks. Trump is inept - he's too impulsive to prepare things properly, to work with others, to ... well, lead.
That he's venal and corrupt isn't helping, of course.

(52,243 posts)i agree with your main point, that we tend to say he's incompetent when we think about how he fails in *our* objectives. that's not incompetence, because he's not trying to promote equality or fairness, e.g. he's actually doing quite well in promoting a hierarchical society with whites over blacks, men over women, etc.
where he actually is incompetent is that he's unable to achieve *his* objectives nearly as effectively as he would if he had even just a tiny amount of normal politics about him. just the occasional display of actual human compassion or humility or whatever would go a long way. i shudder to think how this crisis might be playing out differently had he been able to start off with a grand unifying speech.
at this rate, he's likely to be a one-term president. i think he had a decent shot at re-election before this crisis, but he's totally botched it. not just in a way that his opponents don't like, but in a way that everybody doesn't like. red-staters aren't really "getting" anything out of liberals being upset about how he's handling this crisis. it's not like trump supporters are immune to covid-19....
so, we're back to incompetent after all. because in the end, he'll be seen as failing to achieve even his own goals.

(22,976 posts)Hes incompetent when standing still with his mouth shut a rare occurrence.
From there, he invariably find multiple ways to make any issues worse. Often several times in a single day.

(11,314 posts)pure nonsense to assign grand strategy to what is essentially chaos ...
There is no Machiavellian genius behind all this .. just a very limited individual who understands astonishingly little of the world surrounding him.

(1,002 posts)What's with Jared hoarding and confiscating the national emergency supply, then divvying it out for favors, etc.? Why are there no inquiries about this? What's with the conniving and vacuous board of grifters assigned to "Open-up America?" What the hell are these greedy bastards up to?
They got rid of the pandemic response team on purpose! And now they're trying to privatize supplies for profit and favors!
I'm not distracted by his daily blubbering nonsense; I'd just like some focus on following the money. Where the fuck are the test kits? Where the fuck are the PPE's? Where the fuck are the ventilators? Why the fuck can a bunch of rich people on a private Florida exclusive island able to get test kits? See article: https://www.miamiherald.com/news/coronavirus/article241920656.html
Where's the fuckin' outrage?
It's bullshit beyond belief.
