A Second Round of Coronavirus Layoffs Has Begun. No One Is Safe.

The first people to lose their jobs worked at restaurants, malls, hotels and other places that closed to contain the coronavirus pandemic. Higher skilled work, which often didn’t require personal contact, seemed more secure.

That’s not how it’s turning out.

A second wave of job loss is hitting those who thought they were safe. Businesses that set up employees to work from home are laying them off as sales plummet. Corporate lawyers are seeing jobs dry up. Government workers are being furloughed as state and city budgets are squeezed. And health-care workers not involved in fighting the pandemic are suffering.

The longer shutdowns continue, the bigger this second wave could become, risking a repeat of the deep and prolonged labor downturn that accompanied the 2007-09 recession.

I won't be looking for Republican's for this help....taxcuts for the rich and Big Business is the only thing they have proposed in the past 40 years. And that 1 trick pony has been flogged to death.

the 1% won't feel a thing. They hold $35.4 trillion in assets. So we take $3.54 trillion of that. That pays for the 2 trillion package already passed and gives us another 1.5 trillion. that bailout should go right to the bottom 99% on a sliding scale..... assuming about 350 million to be paid that is $4300 average per person that can be paid right there.

It's a constant reminder to me when I feel like splurging on something or pigging out on snacks how bad things could get.

The Greatest Depression.

You can see the huge, dark wave rolling out there and it's Tsunami coming for the beach.

their employers as they stay home. But those checks were based initially on the belief that businesses would reopen April 1. Didn’t happen. All of those businesses extended payments another two weeks with the hope of reopening tomorrow, April 15.

Well, that ain’t happening, either. May 1 looks like the highly optimistic date, but I am thinking that CA will not reopen to retail before June 1. I can’t see any of these companies where my family members work paying people for 2.5 months without them actually working.

First line was:
You need to hear from the unemployed.

The intent was to sound an alarm I don’t think people in his position get. Those of us in the dirt... I was formal and polite but insistent that there should be a plan to get us back to earning an income. $1,200 is not going to last one month.

I asked him to actually talk with the workers he let go first-those of us in restaurants and bars. There was NO notice like the retail and other businesses got. March 16 was hell day.

I do not advocate a return if we aren’t ready but I do think that we can be smart and controlled.

One of my main questions is: who says those people still running take out are not sick?

I won’t eat out right now because there is no testing of those preparing/cooking/ serving. Every one of the workers at a restaurant has the potential to be sick or carrying and you/I have no idea what they have been doing in their off and with whom?

It is ridiculous to think/say we have to test people in order to go back to work because there is not near enough testing now and those preparing food RIGHT NOW aren’t being “cleared”.

I know this post will be controversial. It all is right now. But, no future plans for return is equally disturbing. Testing is dead in the water in my opinion.

How convenient that they can lay everyone off and blame it on the pandemic!

We were all going to lose our jobs anyway, but now nobody will start a revolution over it.
