New York Citys death toll soars past 10,000 in a revised virus count.
New York City, already an epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak, sharply increased its death toll by more than 3,700 on Tuesday, after officials said they were now including people who had never tested positive for the virus but were presumed to have died because of it.
The new figures, released by the citys Health Department, drove up the number of people killed in New York City to more than 10,000 and appeared to increase the overall United States fatality rate by 17 percent, to more than 26,000.
The numbers brought into clearer focus the staggering toll the virus has already taken on the largest city in the United States, where deserted streets are haunted by the near-constant howl of ambulance sirens.
Far more people have died in New York City on a per-capita basis than in Italy, the European country with the most deaths.

(841 posts)It's wdely reported that at home deaths in NYC increased 10x during this outbreak. Previously they only reported positive tests. By including deaths coronors ascribe to corona related they offer a more complete picture.

(50,928 posts)If unaccounted deaths are higher than usual then there is likely an under-count due to the virus.

(35,309 posts)At the same time, it'll prove to be simplistic to just take the previous few years' average and subtract that from the current count. It's also been reported that people have been delaying or not going to the ER out of fear of COVID, and as a result that'll lead to some deaths. So that's a COVID death indirectly as a result, but shouldn't be included in the figures because then it'll skew the actual deaths from the virus.

We have had a bunch more Nursing Home deaths also. I know of several more not listed or they couldn't afford a full obit.

My guess is that we'd be shocked if we knew what the ACTUAL numbers are. I'm guessing at least double the current counts.
