He backed off totally from that, like he never said it. Why? I think I know. Hear me out.
After his performance yesterday, I think he must have heard from Republicans in the Senate - Republicans from strong States'2 Rights states. Lindsay Graham, Rand Paul, maybe even Mitch McConnelll. Probably some from other states that have a long tradition of 10th Amendment reliance. What could they have said to Donald Trump to make him so completely back away from his power play of yesterday?
I'll tell you what. They told Donald J. Trump that there were more than enough Republicans in the Senate who would vote to remove the President from office. That's easy to imagine, given the powerful States' Rights sentiments in our southern and some Western States.
That's what I think happened. Trump was completely cowed into backing off today. He didn't mention the whole, "We have to open" nonsense. There was no presentation of his "Open the country" committee. Nothing. He went with attacking the WHO instead, and then handed off responsibility for opening things up to the individual Governors, on their own schedules.
That's a complete and sudden turn-around, and the only reason I can think of would be a threat to remove him from office.
Trump has lost. He is lost. He no longer can claim absolute power. He is finished with that approach.
It's a huge change of direction, and one I don't think he'll ever try again.

(24,412 posts)but I just think he realized how it looked today or at least somebody in the WH talked to him. But Republicans don't care about Republican power grabs and proved it in January/February.

(146,317 posts)His staff is made up of toadies. He does whatever he wants, and they back him up. No. it was more than that that cause him to completely back away from yesterday's chest pounding. Such reversals are not Trump's style at all.

(31,112 posts)martial law, right? But nothing he could do would do the opposite.
Now, I did hear Thom Hartmann today talk about Truman trying to order GM or whichever company it was to go to work and make something. He wasnt using the defense production act, I guess. Not sure what story he is talking about but he said it was taken up by the SC and they told him NO, he cant do that.
If we learned one thing from this it is what some of us have said for years, stuff that we got yelled at for saying, that republicans want us GONE, and they dont care how, deportation, imprisonment or forcing us to go vote and expose each other to the virus so we will DIE!
They want that...not your Joe Scarborough's or that small % of the GOP, but many millions of them want that and their support of the guy DOING THAT proves it.
AND you could be right! ! !

(146,317 posts)He does it gradually, and then later claims he never said it. Today, there was no talk about a commision to manage the "opening." Nothing. He changed the subject entirely, and handed it all over to the Governors.
Very unlike him, and he seemed almost subdued on the subject. Something big happened since yesterday. Something overwhelming.

(34,661 posts)the Orange Anus lost biglee yesterday. Was wondering why Leningrad Lindsey showed his face from his Hiddy Hole.
Yes sir,the Orange Anus was schooled as to he is just lucky the articles of Impeachment are not being brought up on a reconsideration vote.

(95,247 posts)Just as any criminal can indicted anew for a fresh offense.
In fact, there does not seem any bar to repeating impeachment on the same charge, or certainly it could be argued cogently there is none. The provision against 'double jeopardy' is that no one may be put in jeopardy of life limb or liberty twice on the same charge, and all an official impeached stands in jeopardy of is removal from office he holds at the grace of the people.

(9,249 posts)have finally decided to push back. He finally crossed a line that even they couldn't abide. I could see that as the explanation for his sudden turn around.
We'll need to wait for some off the record comments/leaks from anonymous sources.

(1,178 posts)Whenever he has a meltdown like he did on Monday, I often think it's because he's pissed off at someone within. My guess it was Fauci that set him off. In turn, he doesn't think before he talks and he's the type that no matter what he says, he thinks the Trumpers will totally support it. Then he slowly walks back from it.

(4,461 posts)... it might be more directly the NRA folks and anti-abortion crusaders that pinched him. States rights is the strongest pillar in the opposition to Federal gun laws and Federal laws concerning abortion. Тяцмр meddling in and creating executive precedent on a health issue could have unforeseen impacts on those issues - which he would not have appreciated.
Somebody poured water on him, I think that much is certain.

(2,785 posts)but I would bet my bottom dollar if Trump called their bluff there wouldn't be nearly enough votes for it and a few of them would even start agreeing with him.

(34,074 posts)What he said was that with his absolute authority he is allowing the governors to make the decision.
Yes, it is an implicit acknowledgement that he was wrong - BUT - announced in such a way that he can reverse himself anytime he believes he has the political backing to do so.

(11,949 posts)They thought they had it locked up with all the voter suppression. And got their asses handed to them.
The republicans know he is a loon. Always have. But they could not cross him. Now it is looking like sticking with him will cost them bigly. They will cut him loose in a heartbeat if backing him can cost them their seats.
His value to them is decreasing daily. And they all hate him.
They see the Blue Wave building.
