were headed to Libya. Said the strike yesterday was really meant for 9-11. Said their
commentators would be available around the clock tonight should something happen.
It was Shep saying it

(42,770 posts)like a war was a certainty. It reminded me of the gulf war, where everyone came home from
work to watch the scuds fly...like it was a made for TV movie

(3,626 posts)and there are support/security troops en route to protect diplomats and two ships will, indeed, be off the Libyan coast. But NO, we're not going to war. Leave it to Faux to stir up the fear.

(10,960 posts)It doesn't mean we will do anything in particular. The ships have a lot of useful technology... basing drones from them and such.
(And they have cruise missiles if needed.)

(67,799 posts)A Navy task force is at least the equal of an average land-based military garrison. It would be malpractice to not send them.

(61,695 posts)is going to give Libya and Egypt ultimatums on turning over the criminals who murdered American State Dept personnel, either.
The WH might push back hard on getting justice for these people.

We blew up one of Moamar's tents in the desert when Reagan had the con.
I would guess that, in the event that we discover with certainty who murdered our staffers, that "justice will be swift and sure" indeed.

(42,770 posts)and collateral damage can be held to the absolute minimum....we must, unfortunately seek justice. If we could capture them, and get them tried, even better. Geez, can't believe it, I am sounding like a hawk, and I am not. I trust Obama to seek justice in the most humane way possible

(135,425 posts)If the new government of Libya can handle the situation appropriately, I believe he will let them. If there seems to be a bit of unwillingness to nail this down and it looks like there's not much progress being made, I think he'll move with deliberate speed with a measured response once he's decisively identified the murderers.

(135,425 posts)If they learn with absolute precision that the guy's name is SoandSo SuchandSuch and he and his band of operatives are hanging out in a tent forty miles from east Bumfuck, and they can get a positive ID and a clean bead on him, he just might find himself on the receiving end of the same kind of hospitality he meted out.
I think it would be preferable for Libya to do the "meting out" myself, but I do agree with the President's statement with regard to justice in this matter. Whatever it takes. We shouldn't 'tolerate' this, not even for a moment.

(135,425 posts)holding hands with them, like we used to do with the ISI before they started being BLATANTLY duplicitous...
In that case, one would ask them "Shall we push the button?" and if they say "Yes" then justice is, er, served. They make the call, but we deliver the goods. Or maybe not. I'm not in on these details from my comfy couch at home!

(12,799 posts)It would make no sense, except in RomneyWorld, I suppose.
Also, the GNC and Transitional Government present in the name of the Libyan people their deepest condolences to the US Government, the American people, the families of the Ambassador and victims, and confirm the close ties between Libya and the United States, which have become even closer since the decision of the American government to support the revolution of 2/17.
Romney and the neocons have managed to change our perception of what happened. A couple of dozen terrorists did this. I hope our own paramilitary groups don't get any big ideas.

(36,063 posts)Sure they could lob a few shells, maybe launch cruise missles, but at what?
The US would love to attack 2 things...
people coordinating attacks on American interests
or
people conducting attacks on American interests.
The event is OVER no point in going after option 2
There is no evidence that we have an idea who coordinated this, although an attack on a wedding or funeral might make it seem that we do.

(67,108 posts)a floating base of operations. There is not going to be a war. We are not at war with Libya. Religious fanatics got rilled up. I heard one report saying some interviewed did not even know what they were doing, they just joined in, hadn't even seen the film. Frankly, I would be concerned if the US were not moving in a couple of carriers. As someone else said, they can also be used for evacuation. The US always has these carriers moving around, they don't sit docked.

2) we are not going to war, but Obama has to look tough, and responsive to what happened.

(13,992 posts)I'm thinking that there are probably Special Forces on one of those ships. If there is any hard intelligence on who did this -- and it appears that it may have been a terrorist cell using the mob violence as cover -- my guess is that our people will be paying them a visit.

(5,901 posts)And I believe that the US will assist in eliminating their camp - it has to be somewhere inside the country. The new no. 1 / old no. 2, Al-Zawahiri, called for vengeance for the drone killing of the "new no. 2," Al-Libbi (the Libyan) and did this just yesterday. Then that night, there are these embassy murders AFTER the bad-movie protests were overtaken by armed combatants. The Libyan government and people aren't anti-American.
