Man Who Called Ohio's Lockdown Order 'Bullshit' Has Succumbed To COVID-19

https://crooksandliars.com/2020/04/man-who-called-ohios-lockdown-order
John McDaniel railed against Ohio's Gov. Mike DeWine's lockdown order on social media. Weeks later he contracted the virus. A few days ago he died.

In March, John McDaniel called Ohio's shutdown order of non-essential businesses "madness." A few days ago he died.

Now, we don't know the circumstances of how Mr. McDaniel contracted the virus, nor do we know if he took unnecessary and foolish risks. But we do know what he thought of the measures put in place to keep him and the rest of the public as safe as possible. And we all know people who have similar opinions to those that McDaniel expressed on social media. If there's any good to come from his death, let it be that people take those measures more seriously. They're there for a reason.

Unfortunately, they have to find out the hard way. I just saw an exchange on Facebook where someone who wants the economy to re-opened was asked what would they do if they got infected, and they answered "I'd go to the hospital and they'll give me something to treat it." The follow-up question was "What if the hospital is full of patients?" The answer? "There's plenty of room in the hospitals. The media is just saying they're full to try and scare people. They're fear mongerers."

The deniers are still taking it for granted that this is no big deal.

It's going to happen. Don't feel guilty because the natural and expected consequence of a person's irresponsible actions rebounds on him with a deadly result. "Gee, that guy shouldn't have jumped off the Empire State Building, but am I a bad person because I knew what was going to happen to him when he hit the ground?" asked nobody ever.

many thousands who have succumbed to this illness have brought it about themselves because of lack of responsibility. Yes, this guy (and others) have been irresponsible, but COVID-19 has taken the lives of many innocent and well-meaning people as well.

I just don't want to give the impression that somehow people in general are responsible for their infections.

I recall the funeral of a friend who died many decades ago (the early 1970s), at a relatively young age, from cancer. There were mumblings all around the room about "why": it must have been the time he spent in Morocco; it was this or that. I wanted to scream at this attempt to place blame for a disease that nobody has full control over.

Neither should we give the impression that those who have survived are better fighters (implying that those who did not survive simply did not fight hard enough).

This Ohio guy died from potentially self-inflicted wounds, and it certainly is ironic. But we need to be careful to not give too much agency to people with respect to this virus. It is a killer: in general, most people are not killing themselves.

The idea that we shouldn't "speak ill of the dead" because there are also innocent victims, is clearly something that right wingers use, and expect liberals to back away from because of social propriety. We are certainly not responsible for the things that are beyond our control. We should not blame people for being poor, having few options, and thus not making the "best choices". We see things systemically.

We can and should certainly distinguish between people who die from everyday activity and people like McDaniel who defy the warnings, try to publicly advocate for defiance against protective measures, then die from the "hoax" or "bullshit" or "madness" that they are dismissing.

Did he deserve to die? Can't say. Am I glad? NO. Not at all. Is it a tragedy? I don't know. Is it a tragedy that someone knowingly swims in shark infested waters after countless warnings that there are sharks that will eat you?

important to me to worry about, and mourn should, heaven forbid, something bad happen to any of them.

McDaniel is dead now, and more than likely, brought it on himself, since he did manage to catch the CV, despite all of the stay at home orders. The CV doesn't just walk in on you, you literally have to invite the CV into your life. Be sloppy and careless, or an unwilling victim, such as those victims in a lot of nursing homes.

Tens of Millions of us are being safe and stayed at home. Tens of Millions of us have painted our doorways with the knowledge of scientific fact so the CV wouldn't invade our homes, and its working.

Some people, such as these protesters, couldn't hit the side of a barn door if they had to, if their lives depended on it.

Unfortunately, times are different this time around. This time, the CV doesn't let its victims get away free and clear. It hangs onto them w/ a vengeance, and doesn't let go, until you either get sick, die, or you're lucky, you live.

Unfortunately, his carelessness likely took care away from someone who didn't want to get infected and exposed everyone who tried to treat him and everyone else he was in contact with. So, sorry, but I do wish it on those asshats. They should get sick and die. They're going to catch it somehow, even if they're not symptomatic. They might as well die. Excerpt:
Marion - John W. McDaniel, age 60, of Marion, died peacefully on Wednesday, April 15, 2020, at Riverside Methodist Hospital with his loving family by his side from complications from Covid-19.

On May 24, 1959, John was born at the Marion General Hospital, in Marion, Ohio, the younger of two children, to John W. McDaniel Sr. and the late Meredythe Ann (Matlack) McDaniel. He graduated from Marion Harding High School in the class of 1977, where he enjoyed participating on the swim team. In 1981 he graduated from The Ohio State University earning a Bachelors of Science degree in Business Administration. He was a member of Alpha Tau Omega and the Buckeye Club.
++
A service celebrating John's life will be live-streamed at 3:30 pm, on Wednesday, April 22, 2020, via the Snyder Funeral Homes, Denzer Chapel, Facebook page, with Rev. David Hoffman officiating. Have your favorite beverage ready to do a toast in his honor (a glass of red wine would have been Johnny's preference). Afterwards, his family will greet friends during a drive through visitation in the parking lot of the Marion Country Club, 2415 Crissinger Rd, Marion from 5:00 - 8:00 pm. Everyone will be able to visit while remaining in their cars and keeping a safe social distance.

On behalf of his family, they would like to extend a heartfelt "Thank you" to the nurses at Marion General Hospital and to all the staff at Riverside Methodist Hospital for everything they did to try and save Johnny's life from Covid-19. They would also like to remind everyone to continue practicing social distancing to keep each other safe.

Marion County tops Ohio in coronavirus cases after prison outbreak
Staff Reports Published 2:48 p.m. ET April 19, 2020

Link: https://www.marionstar.com/story/news/local/2020/04/19/coronavirus-ohio-marion-county-prison-outbreak/5161613002/

(snip)
A massive outbreak of coronavirus at Marion Correctional Institution has pushed Marion County to the most cases of the disease in the state. According to the Ohio Department of Health, Marion County had 1,834 cases of coronavirus as of 2 p.m. Sunday. Franklin County was next with 1,513 and Cuyahoga third at 1,466.

Gov. Mike DeWine on Friday called on the Ohio National Guard to assist the prison with 50 or so guard members to assist with “mission critical functions.”

The surge in cases in Marion County - which had 103 positive cases on Tuesday - is almost wholly driven by an outbreak at one of the two local state prisons.

As of late Saturday afternoon, there were 1,057 inmates at Marion Correctional with the disease and 103 staff members. Pickaway Correctional Institution had the second most number of cases in a prison with 202 inmates infected and 64 staff. Gov. Mike DeWine on Friday said 60 prisoners in one dorm who were not showing symptoms tested positive for COVID-19 at MCI.

Folks in Ohio seem to finally joining the Branch Covidian Church in droves nowadays.

I cannot say that part of me doesn't want to say, "I told you so" or something like that. We may not agree with everything the government does to "protect us". We know well here on DU that police (government workers) are often criticized for the way the enforce the laws with some groups versus other groups. We complain about wealth and income inequality that is built into the tax code and lack of political will to fund infrastructure versus military. We have a lot of problems with government.

The problem is that we are facing a novel, fast spreading virus that we still do no know all of the risks for. It damages lungs, kidneys, the heart, and if it doesn't kill you, it can leave you permanently debilitated.

I want to go outside too. I want to be able to move about freely with no concerns, but we are not there yet and the more that idiots rail against health orders, the longer this situation will last or the more people will be killed.

This guy died because he did not take the virus seriously. 40,000+ people have DIED in less than 2 months!!

Idiot Trump tweeted that President Obama's and Vice President Biden's response to H1N1 was a disaster because 12,400 people died in the course of a YEAR. He gives himself a 10 in his handling of the current crisis. You can't make this shit up. The people out there protesting agree with Trump's bull shit and think that we should all go back to work and outside while the virus has not yet been contained.

And for the record, I'm not saying anybody 'deserves' to catch covid19 and die, but if one is so anti-science and refuses to follow precautions, it's better he catch it than somebody who is really trying. . . I hope he didn't spread it to others, but I'm certain he did.

Grown up decisions.

The % of deaths will be higher among those that behave recklessly. Will the others learn? If they don’t then their fate may be the same

I'm all for celebrating personal responsiblity. What will America be, if you can't sacrifice your life to save your principles?

I'm being sarcastic, of course. But only a little.

The shutdown wasn't what kept him from living his life, Covid19 was.

The "open america" group should send his surviving relatives a letter congratulating his sacrifice for american freedum. Thanks to people like him, we can congregate on the beach, have our hair and nails done, and attend professional sports.

We awarded medals to heroes who fought in wars to defend our freedom. Why not do the same for those who died for freedum?

The dumb may be free, but actions have consequences and costs. Alas, for McDaniel, the madness has finally stopped.

For every dumbass like him there are plenty of innocents who will die. Hopefully his death will be a warning to some. If it were simple karma, delusional POS in the WH and all his spawn would have perished by now. It’s really affecting my belief in karma.

He was actively campaigning to kill innocent people, and he died because he was a fucking asshole.

If it makes anyone here feel better to offer him sympathy, then I say more power to you, but I will shed no tears for assholes who deliberately threaten public health and safety the way this asshole did.

I wonder if, as he breathed his last, he stopped to consider that maybe, just maybe DeWine was right.
