To reshape his coronavirus narrative, Trump is touting praise from Democratic governors

With ratings for his coronavirus response slipping, President Trump might need help convincing Americans he’s doing a good job. He’s relying on an unlikely source for reinforcement: Democratic governors.

Trump still has an antagonistic relationship with a number of high-profile governors in hard-hit states. He is still blaming governors for his administration’s ventilator shortages, and most recently he’s trying to set up state leaders to get the blame if reopening the economy doesn’t go well. And he’s encouraging protests against some Democratic governors’ stay-at-home orders, even as his administration urges social distancing.

But Trump has also shown in the past few days he needs praise from governors to help him change the narrative about his coronavirus response.

On Sunday at the White House coronavirus task force briefing, Trump aired two different clips of New York Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo (D) saying earlier that day that the federal government is a big reason New York is getting better and why no one has been refused a hospital bed.
