A political scientist says the media is making a big mistake about Trump's chances in 2020

Between now and November, President Donald Trump’s reelection campaign will come up with many different ways to attack his Democratic opponent, former Vice President Joe Biden. But how effective the lines of attack will be remains to be seen. And Daniel W. Drezner, a professor of international politics at Tufts University, argued that many are in denial about Trump’s standing in the 2020 election.

Some mainstream media coverage of the campaign, Drezner writes in a Washington Post op-ed, is — in an effort to be fair to Trump — downplaying some of the problems his campaign is facing during the coronavirus pandemic.

“My personal favorite is this headline on an Associated Press story: ‘Coronavirus could Complicate Trump’s Path to Reelection,’” Drezner asserts. “I know the AP is as strait-laced as possible in its coverage, and to be fair, the story is straight-forward in describing Trump’s challenges come November. Still, this is equivalent to a headline on December 8, 1941, saying: ‘Japanese Attack on Pearl Harbor Could Complicate America First’s Desire for Isolationism.’

“Trump’s surprise victory in 2016 has caused political analysts to focus on the ways he can survive this debacle. And there is a chance that he can,” Drezner writes. “In the past century, only three presidents have run for reelection and lost. But the fact remains that Trump lost the popular vote and barely eked out an electoral college victory in 2016. November’s election will be a referendum on his presidency, and the country will be worse off in every possible way compared with four years ago."

How has Trump expanded his voting base in the last four years?

Let's take a quick trip to fantasyland and pretend everything was on the up-and-up for the 2016 election. Trump lost the popular vote by 2.8 million ballots. He won several states by less than the margin of error. What has he done to shore up his support in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania? Will he hold Florida? How? What has Trump done in those states to win them again? Will he win any states that he lost in 2016? What's your rationale for that? Because Trump has done nothing for states that he lost in 2016.

it opened the door for the likes of Pox News and hate radio, essentially Russian propaganda 24 / 7.
After that News was for ratings and advertising dollars, rather than reporting the unvarnished truth. Trump was a gold mine for news outlets as he fomented violence with his appeal to the disaffected and stupid. He brags about his ratings because ratings is all that matters to the bean counters.
Unless and until we restore the Fairness Doctrine we will be subjected to a constant stream of Putin inspired propaganda.

And we have a segment of the population in the middle that doesn't give a shit about anything or anyone else, not even themselves.

Put it together and the stupid, lying, cheating, narcissistic, grifting, evil, S.O.B.s just need a few more voters to make it a race. Because no matter what, no matter how many Americans die, no matter how much the economy craters, no matter how many people lose their jobs, conservatives have an evil core that will cast their votes for their candidate like clockwork and rePuticans will be re-elected like the shitting incompetent self-serviing jobs they did while in office had no bearing on anything.

We have to fight for every vote for democrats. And we must stomp every conservative out, now!

When IU went to the grocery store yesterday, a Trump store had opened up down town. I was the only person wearing a mask, the only person flowing the arrows on the floor. I really do not see any sign that his support has done anything but get better. I asked my clerk why no one was following the arrows and nor wearing masks, she had no idea and was scared.

under reported and underestimated the influence and direct intervention of the GOP and Putin's vast array of shills, 3rd party trolls and hackers, and their ability to adjust and disorder the vote and how it is counted.

Trump can do much to lose voters it is true. However, those who put him in power aren't going to sit on their hands and wait for the next 2 or 4 year cycle. They have nearly shut down the Republic. That is not a tactical position they are likely to cede without one hell of a fight.
