The New York attorney general’s office has opened an inquiry into the cable TV and internet giant Spectrum for its policies requiring employees to keep working at offices and call centers rather than at home.

More than 230 of the 95,000 employees nationwide of Charter Communications, as Spectrum is formally known, have tested positive for the coronavirus, according to a person with knowledge of the company.

Spectrum workers in cities like Syracuse, N.Y., have questioned the company’s determination that about 80,000 employees have jobs that “cannot be performed effectively from home.”

Spectrum owns NY1, the local news channel in New York City. Jeanine Ramirez, an anchor at NY1, has been broadcasting from home, and called on the company to allow more workers across its divisions to do the same.

“If we could build an entire studio at home, a sales job should definitely be able to be done remotely,” she said.
