I'm from the Government, and I'm here to help"
Turned out to be a big pile of shit. Always was actually.
I wonder if Covid-19 will finally consign Reagan's legacy to the ash heap of history.

(36,478 posts)Seems hypocritical to me, to loathe government, but campaign for a government job. People need to sharpen up. There's a reason why the GOP started filling positions on Boards of Education all across the country back in the 80s and why they want to dismantle public education.
As people do better, they start voting like Republicans - unless they have too much education and vote Democratic, which proves there can be too much of a good thing.

(11,738 posts)They do not necessarily disdain government. They disdain the idea of government being used to equalize opportunities for people that they deem as "less than". Conservatives believe in a "natural social order" a hierarchy. At the top are rich, White, Protestant, men. The purpose of government to conservatives is to support that "natural order". They think that Democrats wanting to use government to set up an equalizing tax policy or a social safety net is an abomination.
Republicans want to govern, or I think more realistically, they want to rule. Government is fine to them as long as it is enforcing the existing economic and social order. They have NO problem with government as long as it is not used to force the unnatural idea that people should have equal access to opportunity and basic security.
Conservatives have been pretty successful at getting people to believe that they are successful ONLY through their own hard work (not by the successes of previous generations and the collective support of society in general). That isn't too difficult either. I feel special thinking that I am where I am because I am smarter, and harder working than other people. It feels less special to acknowledge that my parents had money to send me to better schools, that I grew up in a safe neighborhood with plenty of food, and the ability not to have to work to support my family was a youth, and that those advantages helped me to get where I am. Conservatives capitalize on those biases and get people to think that "other people" who are lazy or inferior intellects, are getting some kind of unfair advantage over them and "government" (Democratic lead) is the entity that creates this "unfair" situation.
We also know that government can be inefficient and plain and simple, not work. Conservatives actually want government to be inefficient when delivering services to the average person. They prefer to privatize the commons, except for the military, thought they have privatized much of the ancillary services in the military, like food preparation.

You're more optimistic than I am; Conservatives have already seated Ronnie at the right hand of the father, and they will never forsake him.
I have never understood the adoration and praise heaped upon him, and he sure as shit wasn't any "great communicator." At the time, in the years since, and today I can't listen to a syllable out of that stupid mouth without being struck by how boring he is, and how it's obvious bullshit 100% of the time.
The ones who call him a great communicator are the ones invested in that lie, either because they've told it for decades, or because they need to believe that he was some superhuman figure rather than a decripit old asshole well on his way to irreversible dementia.
Fuck him. Fuck Nancy. And fuck every Republican before and since.

(34,111 posts)If we had not been saddled with Reagan we might have remained a better country. He began the trend to the lowness we have sunk to. If I had to name one that would tie with my loathing of Trump it would be Reagan.
Nixon was bad of course but Reagan had that showmanship thing and he knew how to use it. If you were not the brightest in the box he was there to make you feel like you were. The very thought of him makes my stomach turn.

(34,111 posts)Nobody would have looked into that. He was beloved much more than Trump. Trump is a jackass that jackasses can aspire to and feel supported by. Reagan was "Bedtime For Bonzo" aww shucks with a jar of jellybeans on his desk at all times, AND HE SHARED THEM! I remember hearing all of that and wondering what people thought actually qualified him for the job. I know little of him as governor or what he did as president of the screen actors guild (like that gave him a good reason for consideration as president?).
He got in by cheating and risking American lives and he stayed in because he was just such a nice man. He even started the deregulation with a tilt of his head and stearn but grandfatherly look.
Awwww, I have to stop this. Thinking of Trump is enough and that is what we need to do now and everyday to see that he does not somehow make it back in. Reagan has pissed me off every day since he started running so I try not to think of him.

(15,437 posts)He was very popular in 1984, and the economy was booming. He also knew how to talk. He convinced many Democrats to vote for him because of his smoothness. My mother was a Democrat who loved Carter, and was so upset when he lost in 1980. By 1984 she voted for her first Republican.
