Former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld asserted yesterday that Mitt Romney was right to point out that the U.S. embassy attacks in Egypt and Libya were due to "perceived American weakness."

The attacks on our embassies & diplomats are a result of perceived American weakness. Mitt Romney is right to point that out.


However, the Daily Dolt points out that there were twelve embassy attacks during George W. Bush's presidency -- the most of any president -- including eight under Rumsfeld's watch.

If Bush and Rumsfeld were in charge, the world would know who was boss, and these attacks never would have happened. Just look at their record!! No one dared to attack a U.S. diplomatic facility when they were running the show. Right? That’s right, isn’t it? We assume that’s correct, or else Donald Rumsfeld surely would not have published such a Tweet. But let’s Google it just to be sure…

Actually, there were twelve terrorist attacks on U.S. diplomatic facilities abroad during George W. Bush’s tenure — the most of any president in history — and eight of those occurred while Donald Rumsfeld was in office.

The embassy breaches on Tuesday marked the second attack on U.S. diplomatic facilities during President Obama’s tenure, including one in April 2010 in Pakistan which was in retaliation for drone attacks there (if one counts the attacks in Libya, Egypt, and Yemen separately even though they occurred at roughly the same time and arose from the same incident, the total during his presidency is four). Even after Osama bin Laden’s death, America’s diplomatic facilities did not come under fire.

We know quire a bit about force levels, contingency plans, the whole "Powell Doctrine" of overwhelming force, the folly of depending on an entire sting of unlikely assumptions working, etc. Not to mention keeping logistics under the military chain of command.

According to the State Department Office of the Historian, five U.S. ambassadors had been killed in the line of duty by terrorists prior to the killings of U.S. Ambassador to Libya J. Christopher Stevens and three embassy staffers on Tuesday. Here are their stories.

Only the first, John Gordon Mein, was killed while a Democrat -- Lyndon Johnson -- sat in the Oval Office. The rest were all killed while Republicans were on watch.

Does this mean anything? Not really. The reasons for the killings were many and varied, and to attribute them to any one political party would be both ludicrous and dishonest. Of course, that doesn't stop Rumsfeld from making his unsupported accusations, as he has a history of being both dishonest and ludicrous.

Rumsfeld�s December 19-20, 1983 visit to Baghdad made him the highest-ranking US official to visit Iraq in 6 years. He met Saddam and the two discussed �topics of mutual interest,� according to the Iraqi Foreign Ministry. �[Saddam] made it clear that Iraq was not interested in making mischief in the world,� Rumsfeld later told The New York Times. �It struck us as useful to have a relationship, given that we were interested in solving the Mideast problems.�

Just 12 days after the meeting, on January 1, 1984, The Washington Post reported that the United States �in a shift in policy, has informed friendly Persian Gulf nations that the defeat of Iraq in the 3-year-old war with Iran would be �contrary to U.S. interests� and has made several moves to prevent that result.�

In March of 1984, with the Iran-Iraq war growing more brutal by the day, Rumsfeld was back in Baghdad for meetings with then-Iraqi Foreign Minister Tariq Aziz. On the day of his visit, March 24th, UPI reported from the United Nations: �Mustard gas laced with a nerve agent has been used on Iranian soldiers in the 43-month Persian Gulf War between Iran and Iraq, a team of U.N. experts has concluded... Meanwhile, in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, U.S. presidential envoy Donald Rumsfeld held talks with Foreign Minister Tarek Aziz (sic) on the Gulf war before leaving for an unspecified destination.�

The day before, the Iranian news agency alleged that Iraq launched another chemical weapons assault on the southern battlefront, injuring 600 Iranian soldiers. �Chemical weapons in the form of aerial bombs have been used in the areas inspected in Iran by the specialists,� the U.N. report said. �The types of chemical agents used were bis-(2-chlorethyl)-sulfide, also known as mustard gas, and ethyl N, N-dimethylphosphoroamidocyanidate, a nerve agent known as Tabun.�
