Jimmy Kimmel Proves: Apple’s Magic Is In The Brainwash

Apple has definitely perfected their magic trick. There’s no doubt about that. The company has the ability to brainwash, and I say that as someone who has been brainwashed myself by the beauty and simplicity of Apple products. But it stretches far beyond the actual hardware, software or services, and delves straight into brand perception.

Reports even suggest that fanbois brains respond to Apple imagery the same way that religious fanatics’ brains respond to religious imagery. It’s an incredible feat, and some are so very indoctrinated that they stop trusting in their own sensory perception and simply trust the brand. Whole-heartedly.

Such is the case with this spoof from Jimmy Kimmel. The comedian took an iPhone 4 out on the streets and told people it was the new iPhone 5. To be clear, no one but Apple employees has the new iPhone yet. It goes up for pre-order at 12:01am on Friday.

In any case, every person in the video thinks that the two-year old iPhone 4 is “faster,” “lighter” and even more durable than the iPhone 4S. Just because they were told it’s the iPhone 5. In fact, one guy was actually holding the iPhone 4S in his hand as he inspected what he thought to be the iPhone 5 (which, again, was the iPhone 4).

http://techcrunch.com/2012/09/13/jimmy-kimmel-proves-apples-magic-is-in-the-brainwash/

Check out the hilarious Jimmy Kimmel Video

In the video, Apple fans think an Iphone 4 is Better than an Iphone 4S Simply because they believed that it(the iphone 4) was the new iphone5. They even say it feels lighter, much faster, more user friendly etc etc

This tallies very well with the results from a research the BBC reported on

Apple triggers 'religious' reaction in fans' brains, report says

Next time Grandma asks why you're going to the mall on Sunday morning instead of church, tell her you're going to Apple Chapel.

For Apple fans, the brand triggers a reaction in the brain that's not unlike that of religious devotees, according to a BBC documentary series that cites neurological research.

The neuroscientists ran a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) test on an Apple fanatic and discovered that images of the technology company's gadgets lit up the same parts of the brain as images of a deity do for religious people, the report says

http://articles.cnn.com/2011-05-19/tech/apple.religion_1_apple-store-apple-employees-brains?_s=PM:TECH

This just proves what we PC/Android/Open-source guys have been saying all along. Apple is not a company that innovates, but its a company that relies on marketing its brand-identity amongst its cultist followers...followers who are identical to the religious fanatics from the religious right/Taliban

PS: let the flame wars begin

Most of the Microsoft/Android fans are fans not because of brand, but because of technological specs/features...which is the complete opposite of the reasoning by the vast majority of Apple fans.

Btw did you check out the new 'lightening' connector cable for the iPhone?

Identical copy of the industry standard MicroUSB cable but tweaked slightly so it would only work with Apple/apple aproeved products.

Needless to say, it also costs 4 times as much as a microUSB cable and lacks the Video out and MHL(media high density link) features of the MicroUSB.

Selling under-specced products at 4 times the cost..the standard Apple business practice

in a conversation about the new iPhone 5. It applies to all the mobile phones, I suspect - but it got me thinking about how the phenomenon of mobile telephony has changed the way people perceive the world and their place in it.

I can't find the report for a quote, but essentially the reporter was discussing how what used to be a mi casa su casa attitude about sharing applications has become the exact opposite in recent years and uses, as an example, Google maps.

In the past (I guess, I've never owned an iPhone), Apple welcomed Google maps but not now. The iPhone 5 will not have Google maps - but apparently it will have a similar app that not only will allow users to find stuff, but will use the GPS data that a user's phone is transmitting to recommend things - presumably based on what it perceives your activity to be at any given moment.

For instance (she said), say you've been out drinking in a club. When you leave the club, your iPhone will suggest the nearest 24-hour diner. Note that she didn't say you were looking for a 24-hour diner - rather, your phone will assume, based on your location (a bar) and the time period (late night) that you are in need of sustenance to stave off the effects of too much alcohol (presumably).

Obviously, they were talking about the iPhone - but I can't imagine that all the other mobile phone makers won't be jumping on that band-wagon very soon . . .

The report then had a brief clip of a psychologist doing studies in this sort of thing. He said that increasingly, the goal of companies is not just to own your data - but through your data, to own you.
------
I fine the idea of that appalling, but I realize I'm something of an outlier when it comes to embracing mobile telephony so I checked with some friends.

Pointing out that this seems to be a trend of technology rather than something specific to Apple, I asked how they felt about their phone figuring out what they were up to by tracking them on GPS.

The Android and other users were disgusted at the thought.
The iPhone users didn't see it as a problem.

I'm still sorting through what this suggests - but it does seem to fall in line with the reports in your OP.
Strange stuff, certainly.

16. Actually the "Google Now" does this and more already
Thu Sep 13, 2012, 07:55 PM
Sep 2012

Google released this as part of the Android 4.1 Update in July.

I have it on my Android Phone(Galaxy nexus)..and I continue to be amazed by it's featuers

For example, Google now knows I usually travel from my home to work at a certain time every weekday, it also knows my destination because I use the Google navigation to get there. Based on that it knows it usually takes me about 30 mins to drive there. However, everyday it checks the traffic on that route just in case. On days with more traffic than usual, Google now would alert me ahead of time and let me know that I have to start driving earlier (even gives me the time i should leave home) in order to be on time!

If I searched for a flight..it would track the flight and let me know if its delayed or on time...Or if I am near public transport stop it will tell me what time the next bus/train will arrive!

or if I go to a restaurant, it will ppop up a small card on my phone suggesting the most popular food items in that restaurant.

the list goes on.

Oh also this "Google now" feature is part of Google's voice search feature as well but is much more global in its approach. For those who are worried about the "awareness' of this app, Google lets us select privacy settings which can limit or even turn off this feature.

To either take the battery out of your phone or leave it at home. The mandated by law GPS chip in your phone continues to broadcast whether the phone is on or off.

The radio transmitter in the phone can be used to triangulate the position of the user by his distance from radio towers. GPS is passive.

And yes, the only way to be completely off the grid is to take the battery out...something which cannot be done on iphones but can be done on most Androids(hehe i had to get that point in )

Yes prior experience would lend a person to give credit or have some loyalty to a brand/product line but if that loyalty isn't backed up and maintained all you are doing is giving up your reason and will to something based on previous good feelings or your own expectations.

So 'Or maybe they have a good product' doesn't answer why people saw the iphone4 which some owned & had in their hands already that they were told was the iphone5 and decided it was faster, and lighter than the exact one they had.

It's not a Dell vs Mac OP. I was just pointing out that not breaking down is not Mac thing. It's an operator thing, useage thing. luck thing, as long as you stick with a fairly reliable brand.

Again, the OP is about people THINKING that what they are looking at is "new and improved," but it's the same ol' thing that is in their pockets. People can be easily duped. I imagine that would include me, too. But no use asking me about the new iPhone, since I don't use them.

and swore I'd never buy an Apple product. But in April, I bought an iPhone 4S on the Sprint network because switching carriers would save me ~$45/month.

Anyways, I love the iPhone 4S. It's so much easier to use than the Android operating system. It's much more user friendly, it's got more apps that work for me (I'm a graduate student), and it's got a clean UI.

Nobody other than tech nerds care about open-source or anything like that. Users want simplicity, and that's what Apple offers. Androids OS was way too convoluted and it wasn't user-friendly. It was clunky and confusing compared to iOS 5.

I'm definitely happier switching to Apple.

Edit: Another thing that annoys me about Android phones is that there's a new one on the market every two to three months. It's hard to keep up with new Android phones when they keep coming out with new ones all the time.

40. About the UI
Fri Sep 14, 2012, 01:01 AM
Sep 2012

Im glad that you found an Os that you like. My OP was only meant to point out the mentality of the die hard fans and definitly not meant to disparage regular Apple users.

Btw have you used Android 4.0 and Above? (Android 4.0 ICS (Ice Cream sandwich ) and Android 4.1 JB (Jelly Beans)). I find the Android 4.0/4.1 User interface to be much cleaner than apple's IOS interface. Apple seems to have stuck with a somewhat tacky(imho) and skeuomorphic design with pretty cheesy buttons and whatnot.

The new Android interfaces on the other hand are pretty clean and give a simple yet sleek/futuristic look(again, this is but my opinion)

Check these Screenshots of IOS6 and Compare them to the ones of Android 4.0/4.1

Apple's IOS 6 Screenshots

[IMG][/IMG]

Android 4.0/4.1 Screenshots

[IMG][/IMG]

The Android Screenshots are as follows

Top row left to right
1 "Google Now" cards which are swipe-able
2 Android notification bar(in swiped down position) with actionable widgets
3 the "share" option in the Photo gallery..notice the diverse and dynamic(share lists grows/shrinks based on installed apps)

Bottom row left to right
1 The Button-UI in Android..compared to the bubble design of IOS
2 A page from the settings menu..again clean and sleek UI
3 A Screenshot of the entirely customizable screen.

I definitely think that the New Android UI is much nicer and sleeker than the IOS one.

EDIT:

I for one actually love the fact that one or more Android Flagship phones are released every 3 months or so. This ensures that there is a huge choice for people and their particular preferences.

Want a 5.3 inch device with a smart stylus? there is one
Want a 3.5 inch screen? there is one
Want something in between? there are more options to choose from
Want a phone with a physical keyboard as well as touch screen? sure
Want a rugged MilSpec phone ? sure

The list goes on and its a great thing. Im a firm believer in the uniqueness of human beings and there is no such thing as "one perfect size/design that fits all" . If that is the case then why are we humans wearing so many different clothes/ or drive so many different cars? Different strokes for different folks and Android embraces this.

Furthermore Android caters to people from all walks of life...from one who cannot afford the high prices of iphones to those who can and more. Furthermore the so called "cheap" android phones offer almost all(and in some cases more) features than the newest iPhone. This democratization of technology and information is something I; as a Liberal and a democrat welcome whole heartedly.

Yeah the Android 2series and 3 series were feature rich, but not really great UI wise, which is rectified in the 4 series, imo

One thing that is annoying is the way they do wallpaper. I like photography and designing backgrounds, but it is nearly impossible to do this on Android.

...a little-known but highly influential document called "Apple Human Interface Guidelines." It details the principles with which Apple's products, both hardware and software are designed. I believe it is the key to their long-term success. Their marketing has been very spotty - some good marketing, a lot of terrible marketing. And their prices are high. I believe their product design is the key to their success and I believe Steve Jobs knew that and never let up on that.

The fact that they just changed the size of the Iphone makes a pretty clear point that all of that is marketing hooey.

They realized they were wrong and they corrected or are attempting to correct their mistakes.

Regardless despite all the iphone hype Android is the most popular OS on the planet far surpassing IOS and samsung almost doubles Iphone sales. If what you think is true was true these numbers would look much different.

I use Apple products but I send ZERO time obsessing over them.

In contrast, the haters seem to have real issues that need to be resolved.

One does not see PC users or Android users standing in line rain or shine for hours just so they can get a phone(its just a phone after all!) on the very first day. Such levels of devotion is rather scary and amusing at the same time.

I think its fair game to poke fun at such absurdly Cultist behavior..the same way I poke fun at the creationists/evolution deniers.

I own a couple of Apple computers along with an iPod. I have never stood in line for hours for some new Apple product. I have asked dozens of people I know who own Apples about this and everyone of them say they have never stood in some line to buy one. It's a tiny group of Apple owners who do this, and people like you think all the millions of Apple owners storm down to the nearest Apple store as soon as a new product is released. The number of obsessed Apple haters on this board outnumbers the Apple users by 10-1 at least. It's so bad that haters like you would give money to republican trash like Michael Dell before giving some to Apple CEO Tim Cook who voted for Obama.

The Apple haters have created their own cultist behavior here on DU. Apple users enjoy their products. A small percentage of them want the newest one as soon as it comes out. Because of that, we're all labeled as cultists by the
Apple haters, who themselves have formed their own anti-Apple cult.

And do let me know where I generalized all Apple consumers as fanatical Cultists.
I have clearly used the term fanboys and cultists to differentiate general apple users from the fanatical Apple cultists.

Seems to me that you are getting offended just cos I point out the fact that Apple does have a fanatical fringe which looks similar to religious fanatics worldwide. It's a fact.

Oh and also, before you hate on the so called "ihaters" I would suggest checking out the threads started by certain DU members (Eg: Onehandle). Suffice to say that it's his fawning pro-apple(Anti everything-not-apple) threads on DU which made me post Apple related subjects in the first place.

What is good for the goose is good for the gander

PS: let's look at a real life example. There are more than what? a Billion Christians on this planet. However there is a very small but very vocal minority amongst them that pushes BS like creationism , anti choice and young earth theory. It is perfectly ok to ridicule them for their actions(We see this happen in DU all the time), and in the same vein it's perfectly ok to ridicule Apple fanatics in the same manner.

Lol What?

lets look at the facts shall we

UC,Microsoft, Google folks are top sources for Obama funds While WallStreet tops Romney's list

Democratic President Barack Obama gets campaign support from the tech community while Republican challenger Mitt Romney courts Wall Street.

President Obama's campaign is getting financial help from people associated with two big tech firms: Microsoft and Google.

Following the University of California, those companies were listed as the second and third top contributors to his re-election campaign by OpenSecrets.org, followed by the lawfirm of DLA Piper and Harvard University.
Mitt Romney's list is a who's who of Wall Street: Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan Chase, Morgan Stanley, Bank of America, and Credit Suisse Group.

Obama's ties to the tech community go back to his first presidential campaign, when then Google CEO Eric Schmidt (now executive chairman) campaigned for him, and served as an adviser. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer also backed Obama four years ago. After the election, several Googlers left the company to join the Obama administration, Schmidt became a member of the Transition Economic Advisory Board and he and Craig Mundie, chief research and strategy officer at Microsoft, were named to the president's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology

I was referring to the people that hate Apple with such a compulsive obsessiveness that they feel the need to be active about it.

In all honesty, it is just a product. use it or don't use it. But to make a big deal about people that do use it strikes me as rather crazy.

It does have some of the aspects of religion & cult. I have found for my use, that the damn things simply work for me. I also try to stay one or more generations behind the latest release on both desktops & iPads, not only to save money but to give them time with the technical hiccups. No iPhone for me as my carrier T-Mobile doesn't do them (maybe someday).

Others try to copy it. Result = better experience for all.

And no, I don't have an iPhone, Ipad, iPod, etc., just an Apple computer, which works fine with all the professional software I've bought and upgraded over the years that works, quite well, on that platform and is necessary in my industry, if I want to produce work that fits professional standards and won't hold up workflows.

If you or others think you're somehow superior to Linux or Apple users based on your platform, you are the one with a religion problem. At least my Apple "religion" has never sent me to blue screen hell, while my pc often did, and I never had to keep tithing big money to the Apples I've had to keep them operational. Once every 5-6 years, maybe.

Now, can you not find something else to complain about during this presidential election season? Anything? I haven't seen Apple users tearing their way into embassies, but I'd be willing to bet the computer-literate among those who did were using Microsnot products.

So there. *SNIFF!*

Perform the same exercise with just about anything and you would get the same results.

People are highly suggestive. One of the best way to market is to get the subject to 'believe' that the 'seller' respects their opinion and that it will make a difference.

And the 'Apple Fanatic' is dead. Apple is a mainstream respected brand that everyone knows.

Apple's New Foxconn Embarrassment

9/12/2012 @ 2:38PM

As Apple launches its much-anticipated new iPhone 5 today, news reports about conditions at the company’s manufacturing partner in China, Foxconn Technology, are fueling renewed criticism of the labor practices that go into making Apple’s popular products. Yesterday’s New York Times had a detailed report about vocational students who were being virtually forced to work at Foxconn plants producing iPhones and their components. At the same time, a journalist at the Shanghai Evening Post (translated by m.i.c.gadget.com) went undercover and worked for 10 days at a Foxconn factory in Tai Yuan, where the iPhone 5 was being manufactured. He wrote about filthy, smelly, cockroach-infested dormitories, numbingly repetitive work and pressure to put in maximum overtime.
