(CNN)Epidemiologists are still baffled by how the coronavirus pandemic has played out thus far in Florida but the state's governor isn't waiting much longer to declare his response a win.
As Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis prepared to reopen much of his state Monday, he took a victory lap that began at the White House last week -- touting his "tailored" and "surgical" approach to stay-at-home orders as the central reason Florida has so far defied the dire predictions that it would become "way worse than Italy."
With his self-congratulatory news conferences, DeSantis sparked new debate over the stay-at-home measures in more restrictive states -- framing those measures as "draconian" compared to what he views as his more targeted approach. But a number of epidemiologists warned it is too early to jump to conclusions about what kept case numbers lower than expected.
Ridiculing the scientific models that DeSantis says overstated the crisis and encouraged a climate of fear, the Republican governor has chided critics who faulted his slow and often hapless response to the coronavirus in March when spring break revelers thronged Florida's beaches.

Okay Desantis, why don't you stand outside Disney World there in Orlando, and welcome the visitors without gloves or a mask on to show everyone of your fucking victory lap................or go into the stands at Daytona and shake everyone's hands ...........I am calling you a chickenshit......................lead, show how you lead by doing no gloves, no masks............

(12,712 posts)It sounds more like bowing to defeat based on incompetence and ulterior motives that are divorced from the reality and suffering of human life. For people, server illness, death and the long-term chronic effects of this disease for some is actual, felt and pervasive.
Bow to the virus you conquered worms. That's easy to do when you are not out on the front-lines leading like some conqueror's would do in days of old. No, this is not a victory when you sit safely like a true coward and lead like a imbecile.
I agree with the OP. Republican Governers, et all, should be out there greeting their maskless followers up close and unprotected. That should inspire confidence in the freedumb fighters tiny little minds and, perhaps, prove Darwin right again. They can self-select for deletion an debilitation.

(3,922 posts)Florida's percentage of fatal COVID-19 cases is currently 3.8%, which ranks 35th in the nation in that category.
The number of cases in Florida is 36,078, ranking 8th among all states.
The top three states for cases and deaths are New York (320,002 cases- 7.7% fatality rate), New Jersey (126,744 -6.2%), and Massachusetts (66,263 -5.8%). The nationwide rate of fatal cases from the COVID-19 virus is 5.8%.
Arguably, the three northeastern states mentioned above have superior health care - just ask someone who splits their time between one of these states and Florida.
In fact, the Agency for Heathcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), ranks Massachusetts in the top 10 nationwide, with New York and New Jersey in the middle of the pack. Florida comes in in the bottom 10.
Point is - and this is speculation - I can't place too much faith in the reported numbers from Florida.
Florida is home to a very high number of elderly people, typically victimized by this virus. Either we're not getting the true picture of cases/mortalities or we're in for a very sad awakening when the numbers catch up.
With the political situation and leadership of Florida squarely in batshit crazy territory, either or both scenarios are possible.

When the truth comes out, Florida will have one of the highest.

(Interesting note about using humidifiers indoors during the winter...this never occurred to me)
