Health district says NO coronavirus parties
Walla Walla County health officials are receiving reports of COVID-19 parties occurring in our community, where noninfected people mingle with an infected person in an effort to catch the virus, the Walla Walla Department of Health said in a statement on Tuesday.
While some people with COVID-19 are considered to have mild symptoms, others are at higher risk for severe illness, the statement noted. Health officials stress that there is much we dont know about COVID-19. Epidemiologist dont know if immunity is a sure thing, if reinfection is possible, or if virus could continue living inside you. They do know that even the young can be hospitalized, survivors may suffer long-term damage, and even a mild case isnt mild.
Meghan DeBolt from Department of Community Health told KEPR that coronavirus parties are not part of the solution.
They are taking it in the opposite direction because that will lead to an outbreak and every outbreak that we have sets us further away from reopening important social areas of the economy, she explained.

(13,776 posts)I've never thought before that being American would make citizens of other countries actually pity us, but... I'm pretty sure the rest of the world either pities us or laughs at us right now. We look so ridiculous in every way, every day.

It is amusing in a black humour sort of way but also profoundly troubling.

Its worst for those of us who live here, but it must be pretty disconcerting for our historical allies to see a trusted sibling, whos never been perfect but is essentially dependable, suddenly sticking straws in their hair and gibbering in the corner.

(22,913 posts)"Will people in the relatively near future be discriminated against regarding employment opportunities if they can not provide evidence that they have personally developed anti-bodies to Covid-19? While Covid testing is only available to 1% to 2% of the public, I doubt if many professions would require proof of personal anti-bodies in order to work with the public. Perhaps first responders would be screened in that way. But could employers in the retail sector, or in large office complexes for example, require the provision of anti-body certification from potential hires? If so, might young potential employees be tempted to seek out exposure to Covid-19 on the assumption that it would not seriously sicken them due to their age, so that they could emerge from a minor bout with better job opportunities?"

How sad to see desperate people trying to navigate between the virus, politics, and the whims of businesses which never took much, if any, responsibility for workers' health and safety.

(1,351 posts)There were some ideas being thrown around as to how to open the economy while still controlling the spread. One idea was to test people for antibodies and hand out the equivalent of some sort of ID that would allow anyone who had COVID-19 antibodies to return to work while those not yet exposed would need to remain at home. OMGcan you imagine? You want to see some coronavirus parties, just pass a law like that. People will be falling all over themselves to become infected.
My husband mentioned maybe allowing people to go back to work while protecting the most vulnerable. I said in theory that sounds good but who decides? If you have high-blood pressure but are the sole provider for your family, you are going to be told you have to stay home?
So the only way is if we are all in this TOGETHER.
