Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) said the U.S. may be facing its worst moment since the Civil War as it scrambles to curb the spread of the coronavirus, which has already killed more than 77,000 people in the country. We are in the worst moment in American history maybe since the Civil War, Sanders said on MSNBC on Friday. We are in a terrible, terrible moment.
People are hurting in a way that we have never ever seen in our lifetimes," he continued. "And to top it all, we have someone so irresponsible, so not understanding the current reality as president of the United States that it is just incredibly painful.
Sanders said the government should prioritize guaranteeing that workers receive their paychecks and providing Americans with $2,000 per month to help grapple with the exploding economic fallout from the virus, which has already led to skyrocketing business closures and unemployment claims.
White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow signaled Friday that formal negotiations on the next coronavirus stimulus package would be paused until early June.

(205,839 posts)I was in elementary school when President Kennedy was shot and everyone - teachers, parents, neighbors - were completely devastated. And I was as terrified on 9/11 as I'd ever been - everyone was freaked out and it felt like the world was about to end. I'd always voted, but that was when I really started paying attention, and eventually found my way to DU. But this is worse, the entire country - and also the world - is in jeopardy in a way that we've never experienced before. Our very lives and our way of life is at stake and we have no national leadership and the rest of the world is no longer in our corner - as they were throughout our history. We're on our own.

Stephanopolous: "Is that how you would describe Hillary Clinton against Donald Trump -- as the lesser of two evils?"
Sanders: "Well, if you look -- No, I wouldn't describe it, but that's what the American people are saying."

(25,597 posts)history was the election of Donald Trump in 2016. But some people were invested in both-sides-both-sides-lesser-of-two-evils nonsense, why, I don't know.
