Advocates are decrying a ruling from the Georgia Supreme Court this week allowing an appointed justice to invalidate the results of a judicial election, a decision they fear will have far-reaching consequences for democracy in the state.
In a 6-2 decision on Thursday, the justices determined that the upcoming June election for a Supreme Court seat need not be held because the incumbent justice, Keith Blackwell, plans on retiring before the end of the year.
Six sitting justices, including Blackwell, recused themselves from the case. They were replaced by five lower-court judges.

Canceling an election based on non compelled plans is crazy
aggiesal
(8,937 posts)since he's retiring later this year anyway,
keep him on the bench until he retires.
And since the election for the Supreme Court Justice
is supposed to be held June 9, 2020, Governor
cancelling it, means that when the Supreme Court
justice retires (if SCJ doesn't change his mind), the
election date has already passed and the Governor
will be able to pick the Supreme Court justice himself.
One person cancelled the election. With one vote, a
Georgia Supreme Court justice is elected.
And, that one person/one vote, is the same person,
the Governor of the state of Georgia.
Now that's democracy at work! Very efficient.
Boy, what a country!
