What are your thoughts on him, and how his influence is now even more pervasive than mainstream news media?

(5,042 posts)Joe Rogan was on the Man Show after those guys left.
But Adam Carolla is a full blown smarmy sarcastic righty dickhead also with a podcast. He's probably smarter than Rogan in the sense he knows enough to realize he has to frame shit a certain way to make his libertarian views not sound so fucking dumb.

(35,441 posts)YouTube is the reigning monster in the platform/streaming media wars. People spend more time on it than they do watching TV, and now with education turning more towards online learning, YouTube will grow even more as educators will put their lessons on it as a free, centralized location.

(35,441 posts)People will move to the free podcaster just like when they moved from "subscription needed" Stern to free Rogan. It's extremely difficult to get people to pay for something that they were getting for free. As soon as you move to a subscription model or an advertisement heavy model, they will switch to the free content provider.

(68,586 posts)my family hate Rogan as he is homophobic, sexist, racist anti- transgender piece of garbage. He appeals to incel's and the anti-politically correct crowd, mostly guys-a and libertarians...he was big Ron Paul supporter. He is a libertarian who will vote for Trump and has attacked Biden as he attacks all Democrats. There is no place for Rogan on this site IMHO...not when his best bud is Alex Jones and he encourages Proud Boys and other racists.

(4,610 posts)And his favorite topics -- AI robots taking over the world, MMA and martial arts, chimpanzee attacks, pop science, weed and alternative "supplements", etc. -- are the kinds of subjects that draw Youtube clicks.
I give him credit for interviewing an incredibly wide range of guests. No other comedian would spend an hour interviewing Roger Penrose.
He's filling the gap left behind by the death of mainstream talk radio. If you're the kind of person who normally gets his/her information about the world via that format, he's a better option than some of the alternatives.
That said, the piece is written by Bari Weiss, who has made a career out of being a publicist for the "intellectual dark web", so her experiences with people who want to talk to her are definitely a case of selection bias.
Demsrule86
(68,586 posts)You couldnt post the shit he says here. He is a libertarian voting for Trump.

(4,610 posts)He also interviewed Bernie Sanders, Neil deGrasse Tyson, and Michael Osterholm.
Demsrule86
(68,586 posts)Proud Boys among other scumbags. He is a libertarian and is now busy promoting 'Obamagate'. I can't believe any Du'er would listen to or support this guy. He is a libertarian voting for Trump.
Azathoth
(4,610 posts)Which in and of itself is kind of a tenuous label since he's talked positively about things like universal healthcare and the need to address wealth inequality.
He interviews a wide range of guests and gives them plenty of time to express themselves, something that almost never happens in the msm now. For every guest that you don't like, he'll have one you do. No one says you have to listen to every episode.
His opinions and IQ frankly change depending of the guest he's interviewing. He plays to his audience. When Bernie is on, he's concerned about healthcare. When a conservative entertainer is on, he's concerned about sjw's and whatever right-wing conspiracy theory is trending on twitter that week. When someone with a tech background is on, he's concerned about Skynet enslaving humans.
rockfordfile
(8,704 posts)Concerned? "His opinions and IQ frankly change depending of the guest" that's just a flim-flam artist.

(68,586 posts)hates women, Gays, Transgender and People of color. No reason to discuss anyone like that here...and now he is attacking Pres. Obama. He is the epitome of a right winger... I have no clue why any Democrat would support someone like Rogan. And I have read 1984...not a great comparison.

(4,610 posts)He changes his mind a lot. He made a comment in the midst of a long conversation after his guy Bernie lost. He hasn't endorsed Trump so far as I know.
I think it's pretty obvious your beef with him is a lot deeper than him being a "libertarian" who once offhandedly said he'd rather vote for Trump than Biden.

(43,182 posts)The cheesy reality competition show where he dared people to do stunts like eat bugs.
I know he had his show and now a podcast but it barely seems to have dented my consciousness much.
He seems kind of self-important if you ask me.
At very best he might end up a pop culture figure of a certain time, like Howard Stern or Don Imus or Jerry Springer; Stern peaked in the 90s and while hes still on today, hes hardly relevant anymore except to maybe a diehard band of leftover fans.
He certainly doesnt have any of the actual significance or gravitas of Cronkite.

(43,408 posts)on here. I really feel at times like I enter a bubble when I come on here, but I completely accept that, and I often gain perspectives here I do not get from other facets of my life.
I know of almost no one in my age cohort (18-30, I am dead in the middle) who doesn't know who Rogan is, and a so many listen to him on occasion. This includes a large variety of political outlooks, ethnic backgrounds,income/educational levels, and includes people in the EU, the UK, and the US, even some people from Asia and South America. He gets over 200 million listens/views per month across all platforms. Currently Rogan has the second-ranked podcast on Apple Podcasts. Its often ranked first. I think it (the 200 million monthly downloads) is likely far more, as people often repost him, and that is not included in those numbers. My BIL and pretty much all his friends (especially the 4 other blokes he lives with here in Stockholm) listen to him religiously and they all are so not RW. I myself am not a huge fangirl, but he has some interesting shows I have listened to.
He obviously holds some views that go against the TOS of DU, so I suggest his content should be banned, but do not think for a minute that changes anything in terms of his popularity with a vast and varied group of people, a group that is by nature going to have very little interaction on DU. Many heads would explode (of DUers) if they were cut off from their social set and locked into mine for a few months, as although almost all of my set is vehemently anti-RW, they deffo are not like many on here at all in other aspects (be that for better or for worse.) Like I said at the beginning, it is an age-driven thing to a very large degree IMHO.
