Despite social distancing recommendations and coronavirus concerns, large crowds packed the beaches in western Arizona.
This weekend was very busy. Probably more than last year. Maybe even a lot more," said Jan Kassies, Lake Havasu's director of visitor services.
It was a full house at Lake Havasu over Memorial Day Weekend.
A lot of them came from California. The launching areas were overflowing with long, long, long lines," Kassies said.
This was a stark contrast to the city just one month ago when thousands of locals signed a petition to close down the lake, concerned that tourists could bring the coronavirus with them and overwhelm area hospitals.

I can understand that (some) human beings are social animals and want to be around friends. But there are simply safer ways to do that. Some feel too secure and believe in this 99% survival rate and apparently don't have family members or friends in mind who they could infect.
Unfortunately, I think it will rather cost innocent lives and those that are carriers will not even know about the consequences of their selfish behavior.

It doesn't have anything to do with the fact that there are beaches in LA, it's just that Havasu is known as a party town and the lake is of course, fresh water. Also, since it is a lake, it attracts people who own high performance powerboats that are best suited for calmer waters.
Driving on I-10 out there on a Friday afternoon or Sunday and you will see scores of boats heading out or back home.
It happens all the time.
