J.C. Penney will begin going-out-of-business sales at certain stores within weeks, an attorney for the company said Thursday at a court hearing.
The chain is poised to close 242 stores permanently through its Chapter 11 bankruptcy restructuring plan, leaving it with about 600 remaining locations.
Complicating the plan is the coronavirus pandemic, which forced all of the retailer's department stores to close temporarily. Some of those locations have reopened with social distancing restrictions in place.
The company's lawyers expect to identify the locations that will be permanently shuttered in a court filing June 4. Bankruptcy Judge David Jones is expected to hold a hearing about the proposed closures June 11.

(5,591 posts)Fresh out of college, I started my adventure into the adult work force in the J.C.Penney management training program.
It was, quite simply, an exemplary program of genuine customer service, sales and community involvement. It served me well and taught me invaluable lessons in people skills, service and diplomacy, always from the core belief that people should be treated with dignity and fairness in any situation.
Their teachings stayed with me when I owned my own small retail shop for many years.
Im sorry to see this happen. They had it right.

(15,090 posts)My late husband used to rely on JCPenney for clothing. He hated shopping for clothes, so once a year hed go there to stock up on socks, underwear, jeans, shirts, etc. Then one year they were out of his size in EVERYTHING and seemed to have only very large and very small sizes. A sales lady told him they only restocked the store twice a year now, but he could get it from the catalog. This was probably 25 years ago now.
