Along with the annual CPAC conference, the Value Voters Summit is always a good place to shine the spotlight on the black fetid soul of the modern GOP. And this year, with the GOP in a collective panic over Mitt Romney's ongoing implosion, has been especially illuminating. Highlights so far this year include Bryan Fischer's premature post-mortum on the Romney campaign, a standing ovation for an "ex-terrorist" who apparently made the whole thing up, Paul Ryan's abortion-themed attacks on Obama, Jan Brewer's ludicrous (even for her) defense of her loathsome profiling law and the usual hysterical nonsense from Michelle Bachmann. And, as I already diaried about yesterday, we had Gary Bauer going full on racist by claiming Obama's voters are all fraud and on welfare. Quite a show!
And now comes Rick Santorum to provide the cherry on the top. In a speech attacking supposed media bias against the GOP, the Dog Humper lit slip some unintentional honesty and confirmed something we've long suspected about the modern GOP:
"We will never have the media on our side, ever, in this country," Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator, told the audience at the Omni Shoreham hotel, "We will never have the elite, smart people on our side."
Yep, you heard it folks. Santorum has just admitted that smart people have no place in the GOP. Henceforth, we can officially unveil this slogan:
GOP: Party for Dumbshits
Oh yeah and Santorum also had this to say about the Ron Paul libertarian types:
Santorum also cirticized the libertarian wing of the Republican party for not supporting what he sees as the pillars of conservatism: religion and family.
"When it comes to conservatism libertarian types can say, oh, well you know, we don't want to talk about social issues," Santorum said. "Without the church and the family, there is no conservative movement, there is no basic values of America."
If you want to piss off the already ornery Paulists, Ricky, mission accomplished.
And Santorum also let Mitt Romney know that he's got his back over Mitt's galactic Libyan fuckup earlier this week. I'm sure Mitt appreciates it.
Rick Santorum: Truly the gift that keeps on giving. Just like the Value Voters Summitt.
11:21 AM PT: And the hilarity just keeps on coming. Here's the One Armed Bandit King himself, William Bennett, adding to the list of conservatives who want the media to "LEAVE MITT ROMNEY ALONE!!!"

(21,925 posts)They need science and technology. They benefit from living in a country where scientists and intellectuals strive to roll back ignorance. They depend on Berkeley, MIT, Harvard, Princeton, Columbia and the fruits of our national laboratory system. The stupid party mooches off the productive members of society. The GOP are the Pakleds from Star Trek.

(54 posts)I think it needs to be taken into account that he said "elite, smart" and not just "smart."
That seems to mean not just people who are smart, but people who elite as well. So it's not just smart people alone, but smart, elite people.
The "elite" are usually perceived more negatively.

Parsed anyway, not-so-smart Santorum said the GOP isn't for smart people.

I mean, what a complete idiot to use "smart" to describe the "elite." Did he really think "smart" was a mock?

(8,994 posts)Southern whites troubled by Romney's wealth, religion
LYNCHBURG, Virginia (Reuters) - Sheryl Harris, a voluble 52-year-old with a Virginia drawl, voted twice for George W. Bush. Raised Baptist, she is convinced -- despite all evidence to the contrary -- that President Barack Obama, a practicing Christian, is Muslim.
So in this year's presidential election, will she support Mitt Romney? Not a chance.
"Romney's going to help the upper class," said Harris, who earns $28,000 a year as activities director of a Lynchburg senior center. "He doesn't know everyday people, except maybe the person who cleans his house."
She'll vote for Obama, she said: "At least he wasn't brought up filthy rich."
White lower- and middle-income voters such as Harris are wild cards in this vituperative presidential campaign. With only a sliver of the electorate in play nationwide, they could be a deciding factor in two southern swing states, Virginia and North Carolina.
Reuters/Ipsos polling data compiled over the past several months shows that, across the Bible Belt, 38 percent of these voters said they would be less likely to vote for a candidate who is "very wealthy" than one who isn't. This is well above the 20 percent who said they would be less likely to vote for an African-American.

(116,464 posts)that Republicans chose the worst posible candidate ever as the country is still trying to recover from the worst economic disaster in more than 70 years.
Republicans and their allies tried to hype Mitt's business background to create the impression that he could save the economy just by being elected.
They never counted on anyone challenging that and ripping away the mask to reveal a rich, out-of-touch, vulture capitalist who can be linked to the problems plaguing the economy: foreign bank accounts, outsourcing, tax evasion and greed among the wealthy.
