Trump Administration to Redirect WHO Funding to Evangelist Franklin Graham's Samaritan's Purse

Trump Administration to Redirect WHO Funding to Evangelist Franklin Graham’s Samaritan’s Purse, Putting Lives at Risk

Washington, D.C.—Today, the church/state separation watchdog organization American Atheists denounced the Trump Administration’s alleged plan to steer nearly $400 million in World Health Organization (WHO) contributions to private organizations, including Franklin Graham’s Samaritan’s Purse.

According to multiple reports, Samaritan’s Purse has exploited emergencies in El Salvador, majority Muslim countries, and developing nations to seek Christian converts in exchange for aid—and has received federal funding to do so. In the latest controversy, the organization has come under fire for benefiting from the coronavirus pandemic to advance its culture wars agenda in New York City and beyond.

“WHO conducts coronavirus vaccine trials, distributes test kits, and advises countless governments. A divisive Christian organization whose leader claims this pandemic is due to ‘man turn[ing] his back on God’ cannot be trusted to replace WHO’s critical mission,” said Alison Gill, Vice President for Legal and Policy, who wrote a scathing indictment of Samaritan’s Purse, warning about discrimination against vulnerable groups, such as women, LGBTQ Americans, religious minorities, and nonreligious people.

According to the New York Post, Trump officials have “grumble[d]” about WHO’s “liberal policy priorities,” notably its work on climate change and medically safe abortions. During a press conference, Trump said the U.S. has had problems with WHO “for years” and the nation should have withheld funds “a long time ago.”

“Let’s be clear about Trump’s motives,” said Nick Fish, President of American Atheists. “To improve his reelection chances, he’s scapegoating WHO and is rewarding his most ardent evangelical supporters, like Franklin Graham, for literally demonizing opponents. This is a dangerous quid-pro-quo involving hundreds of millions of dollars in government funding and, more importantly, thousands of American lives.”

Chef Andres does good work and should be funded.

The WHO does critical work, and to think Trump is trying to destroy the organization because they don’t support his “malaria pills for everyone” program is unconscionable.

What it will do is drive off more of the moderately conservative, non religious or somewhat religious Surburban people that decide elections in purple states.

This whole nightmare is turning into a nightmare movie we just can't get away from.

Speechless, and torn up all day. All the last week, All the last 5 months. All the last 3 years, all the last 20.
When exactly is it really going to get better? If we just get everyone to vote this time?

Sorry everyone, just not feeling very hopeful right now.

(Very special friend tonight shared with me a number of her family have been exposed to virus in Ohio, including her parents. A cousin and uncle (uncle had heart surgery in Feb and has bladder cancer, was due to start chemo this week) are positive. One aunt, a nurse, was keeping it secret. Another aunt, a nurse, exposed, is returning to work this morning. And yes, all Trump supporters and Fox News viewers. My friend is devastated. It seems the cousin through his workplace brought it in).

Hopefully this can be delayed until next January by legal actions by American Atheists, Freedom from Religion Foundation, Americans United for Separation of Church and State, and American Humanists Association.

The Trump kakistocracy has been dismantling the government agencies which actually serve the American people, weakening our alliance with Western democracies, destroying America's standing in the world, attacking our civic institions including the free press, and dividing the American people while inciting racial violence.

It's almost like he's a tool of the Russian despot who helped put him in office.

Conducted by Billy Graham and others. He and his family joined a church of their choice and left it to others to do the same - or not. He absolutely believed in the separation of church and state. So now we have a POTUS who has no religious beliefs to speak of who is supporting religious organizations??

How can it be legal for Trump to redirect money already appropriated and voted on?

Pentagon money should have never been allowed to be redirected to his fence.
