The massive protests are happening concurrently with businesses opening up. And because of the protests, coronavirus is not in the headlines much anymore, so hygiene and social distancing are not on the forefront of people's minds.
I fear the misery we've experienced so far is about to look like small potatoes. Hoping I'm wrong.
Before anyone jumps on me for not being a good ally to black Americans, I'm not criticizing the protests per se. Don't come at me with that. But I think we all have to admit that we're counting on masks to do a lot of heavy lifting right now. The fundamental science of Covid hasn't changed, and that means bad shit is coming in our cities.
It's amazing to fathom, for how big and intense these protests are, how bigger yet they'd be if it weren't for the pandemic. Trump and company need to worry. They're seeing only a fraction of what people are feeling.

(6,474 posts)Given the incubation period, that absolutely has to be a reflection of reopening too early. Much too soon to be the result of Floyd murder protests.

(3,814 posts)Hospitalizations are not going up on pace wit the new cases. Most of them are mild or asymptomatic being picked up by the increased testing.
There will probaby be a spike. It probably won't be catastrophic.

(2,753 posts)has been under 3% positive virus testing rates for more than a week, with a record number of tests daily. That means there are likely less people spreading. Though there is some preliminary studies that show that some infected can infect lots of people (so called super-spreaders), and many infected do not spread at all.

(7,541 posts)Simply because many businesses here are requiring customers to wear masks to comply with state recommended guidelines. Still it's only about thirty percent that come into my store wear masks or properly socially distance. Many times I have had to deflect customers intent on pulling my chain over wearing a face mask and a spash shield. I've had a few go full-on first amendment psycho on me as well when I told them to get the hell out of my store.

(14,492 posts)folks still need to be conscious of hand washing/sanitizing, keeping hands off faces, etc.
But still, I think we'll see dozens of hot spots and the vulnerable will suffer for other's fun.....

I am not worried only for him. We are going to have a massive spike.

(65,057 posts)Many states, like here in Illinois, are testing SO MUCH more than 4 to 6 weeks ago that cases are bound to increase.
But hospitalizations, ICU usage, and deaths are the more concerning markers.
If low death rates flip, the casualness of reopening will be revealed.
