The ones used in the US have a steady ultra loud low pitch tone at 2.5khz. they don't make booms and are directional.

The books were more likely some combination of ATM bombings and big fireworks being used as weapons. Monday night had 30+ ATM bombings in Philly

Long range acoustic device. Basically a super megaphone. It's very directional. It can emit very loud warning tones as a crowd control measure, but its primarily used to broadcast voice orders to crowds at long distances.
