American Dystopia should be a near future fictional book plot. And yet here we are...
The Backdrop: A greasy, illiterate, ridiculous, crooked thug, fascist fake billionaire is the President. He has been bought and paid for by foreign countries to facilitate the destruction of the USA from within. A fascist is his propaganda chief and a fascist is his right hand man. The supposed upholder of justice for the country is his blatant bagman (also fascist) and the Department of Justice would be better named the Department for the Protection of Trumps Criminal Enterprise. Far right theocracy loving white supremacist fascists have infiltrated all branches of government, including the highest court in the land, leading to the constitution to be subsumed by their vision of an autocratic and fascist white Christian state.
Scene One: A pandemic is sweeping the world. People from ethnic minority communities are disproportionately affected in terms of morbidity rates. There has been little federal response and the fascists in power are demanding that life goes back to normal – even though this disease continues to kill the old and vulnerable at horrific rates. White supremacists take to the streets wielding high powered arms to demand that their rights must trump the rights of the vulnerable not to die. 40,000,000 people have lost their jobs, foodbanks are running out of food and many people face very uncertain economic futures.
Scene Two: A black man is murdered by a police man (again), in a horrifyingly casual and relaxed way, as in Trumps America, police have been given explicit permission to be their violent and subjugating worst. The images sweep the world and as people howl in protest at the ongoing lynching of their sons and daughter, peaceful protesters are beaten, tear gassed and shot at by police in cities across the nation as the President puts fully armed soldiers on the streets, including with bayonets, outside the most iconic symbol of the republic.
Scene Three: Curfews have been put in place across the land with ongoing violent suppression of protest. Police are given almost unlimited power to act with vicious impunity, including demanding that people who are queuing to vote in a democratic election need to go home, that the curfew exceeds their enfranchisement.
So far so very very future dystopian right now. But I am a sucker for happy endings.
Fade to end scene.
End Scene: November 2020. The fascists don’t realise that the power of the people is greater that the people in power, the criminal cabal at the heart of power all get arrested, President Biden gets busy fixing all the shit the fascists broke and America Dystopia goes back to being fiction. Hurrah!
