I rambled on at great length with a post "the American Civil War never ended and our Gettysburg is coming"
https://www.democraticunderground.com/100213470013
It was typical of a long rant and as most long rants, largely ignored. If I could have turned it into a meme it may have gained more attention.
To keep it shorter I will try to encapsulate
The American civil war never ended as the racism mindset remained intact.
Because of representative government, former members of the CSA regained seats in Congress. Democrats in the south, Republicans in the north.
The Civil Rights Act of 1964 flipped the parties.
Because of expansion (36 states at the war's end) and migration, the North vs South, is not distinct.
MAGA is the newest version of "the South will rise again"
I also wrote about the violence that never ended with the 1960's reaching a flashpoint .... until May 25, 2020. Since I am not psychic, I did not foresee the events of the past 2 weeks.
My point being, and what I really wanted to drive home was; just as the battle at Gettysburg was a turning point in the ACW, our biggest and most important battle will be at each and every voting booth this November.
In the midst of a pandemic there is the real possibility one can get infected and ultimately die but I will willingly risk my live this election in an attempt to oust the racist president and his ilk. If we can stop them, then in 2021 we hopefully can begin a "New Era of Reconstruction"
One that benefits those who truly need help and not the 1%
I yield my time.

(92,219 posts)republican legislators, and not only get people registered, by insure those registered voters actually vote, and vote early when it becomes available
We have to assume especially in those states controlled by republican legislators, that they will limit access to polling places in key districts, by reducing the number of polling places, which is why voting early becomes even more critical

(210 posts)I agree that the election this November, however tarnished and damaged, will be hugely important. The stakes are even higher than the Civil War. After all, if the South had won, the outcome would have been horrific (i.e., continued enslavement for black people), but the North would have been spared some degree of internal conflict until World War II, when the South would have entered on the side of Hitler -- Aryans must stick together -- and made the outcome of that war more doubtful. Now, however, if the MAGA/South-Will-Rise-Again people win, our vestigial democracy will come to an end. Moreover, if the MAGA/South/Republican/Conservatives lose the election, they will continue sabotaging the country, because they do not feel themselves required to be a loyal opposition. They are the original monkey wrench gang and will go about subverting the New Reconstruction with entitled intransigence, unremitting propaganda, and all the resources of their plutocrats, their Russian mafia, their Wall Street greed freaks, and their useful idiot corporate boys. This Civil War will not end with the upcoming election.

(18,964 posts)learned during the Obama administration that they could, quite effectively, impede government and subvert the will of the majority that elected Obama.
They will try the same tactics again. That's why it is important to gain a majority in both the house and the Senate AND change the rules of the Senate to prohibit total obstruction of the house and the presidency.

(595 posts)I didnt realize He was elected to represent Georgia in Congress in 1866, 1 year after the civil war. Although not allowed to serve then he was able to serve starting in 1872 and then went on to be Governor of Georgia.

(18,964 posts)Your synopsis of the events since the civil war were correct.
I was raised in the south and involved in politics as a young, idealistic college student during the early/mid 60s...your assertion of the "flipping of the parties" after the Civil Rights act of 1964 is an important point. The dog whistle: "State's Rights" was the fig leaf which the Republican Party used to hide the racism that it appealed to. Nixon called it his "Southern Strategy"...LBJ said that the Civil Rights Act would lose the support of the south "...for a generation, or maybe more"...he was right but it has lasted far longer than one generation.

(8,835 posts)I too have been concerned for some time about another Gettysburg also.
This new RepubliCON group have stirred up that hatred faction of our citizens to a state of pure ugliness.
They are accelerating, and I seriously wonder if this country will even make it through the summer, let alone until the election.
At this point, I don't think "honestly" winning the election matters to them. Seriously!!!!!!
If they lose, they will declare themselves the winner because the "Dems" cheated.....They have already been foreshadowing that in their media coverage. If they rig the election and win they will be emboldened like nothing we have seen so far.
Either way, they will go full steam ahead making us a Corporate Fascist Tyranny, to replace our Democracy.
In one way, this is far worse than the Civil War. This group of RepubliCONs have allowed a foreign government, that is an enemy of the U.S. to aid in the destruction of our nation and Democracy......
And I can't imagine what Putin will want in return, along with the Chinese and Saudis for their assistance.
