Trump Is Thinking of Replacing His Son-In-LawAfter a botched response to two national crises, Trumps polls are cratering, and no one is telling him what he wants to hear, says a source, igniting a new round of grumbling about Kushner.

In Donald Trumps West Wing, being a member of the Trump family has historically been the ultimate job security. But that truism is being stress-tested after a run of polls consistently show Trump losing to Joe Biden at this stage of the racea CNN poll this morning has him down 14 points. According to a source close to the White House, Trump has mulled taking oversight of the campaign away from his son-in-law Jared Kushner. Trump is malignantly crazy about the bad poll numbers, a former West Wing official said. Hes going to broom Kushner and [Brad] Parscalethe numbers are not getting better, a Republican close to the campaign said.
Long before the reelection campaign went sideways, Trump frequently blew up at Kushner. For instance, former West Wing officials recall how Trump hated when Kushner received too much positive press (In January, Trump was rankled when Kushners portrait graced the cover of Time). Any time Jared is in the papers, Trump complains, We have to get Jared back to New York! said a Republican who heard Trump make the comment. In the end, the source cautioned that Trump wont push Kushner out. This is typical with him and Jared, the source said.
(The White House did not respond to requests for comment. Kushner declined to comment.)
The polling has gotten worse because Trump still hasnt figured out how to handle the politics of the protest movement sparked by the police killing of George Floyd. Axios reported the campaign is debating whether Trump should talk about national unity. Trump took some solace in last weeks unemployment report, which was less horrendous than many economists expected. He was in a good mood, he thinks the jobs numbers will turn things around, said a Republican that spoke with Trump.

(9,670 posts)It's the last resort of a fascist. Start a war and raise the flag. Who would vote out the President during wartime?

Oh, and LBJ probably would have been voted out - but he was smart enough to quit.

(9,670 posts)I'm not so sure they wouldn't buy it. If the media tries to sell it, they're trolling a sucker's market.

(9,670 posts)And no plan too sinister or reckless that salvages and empowers Trump. Don't count him out. It would be his crowning achievement, and we'd hear it from the media and every GOP Congressman that our very way of life was being threatened by (fill in foe here) and immediate and decisive action must be taken.
Having read that the Republicans in Congress are faring worse at the polls than even Trump, I doubt it would take much to push Susan Collins from "concerned" to "vigorously in Trump's corner" if given that opportunity. The rest of those sewer rats would rather pin their hopes of re-election on wartime histrionics than a real and legitimate vote of the people.
Yes, I'm exaggerating. Couldn't happen. Unless.

He might stage a threat or claim a non-existing one to instill fear in the nation or as an excuse to claim a national emergency, but I don't think he would actually start a real war.

(7,947 posts)And you know, after Kushner did Middle East peace and solved the opioid crisis and got rid of all regulation and streamlined government and cured Covid, you think Trump would cut him some slack.
Has anyone failed as much as Kushner and Trump have, without even noticing?

But that would also mean shipping his Princess away from DC. That's not happening. For one thing, Princess probably doesn't want to go now that she can play "working mom Barbie" in DC rather than hang out with all those liberals back in NYC who can longer kid themselves that she's some sort of moderating influence on her toxic father.
