Florida police organization offers to hire cops...this is my county. Context is everything.

https://www.cnn.com/2020/06/08/us/brevard-county-florida-police-union-misconduct-trnd/index.html

First of all, the FOP has absolutely no authority to hire any law enforcement officers. I have no idea if this is what it is like everywhere, but from all I've been told, the local FOP is essentially a Moose lodge for guys who wear/wore blue. I believe they may have significant ties with the union, but they don't seem to be a labor lodge.

Secondly, I would take what Sheriff Ivey of the Brevard County Sheriff's Office (BCSO) says publicly with a dash of salt. He will say whatever he has to say to make himself look good. What he says can be written off as what he thinks you want to hear. This is a guy where what he does matters far more than comments to the press. Judge him by his actions.

Here are some important things to know about law enforcement around here.

Like most areas, we are a tangle of jurisdictions at the municipal/county level. I sincerely believe that if Sheriff Ivey had his way, and he seems to possibly be indoctrinating his deputies to believe this is necessary, municipal jurisdictions would go away and all law enforcement would be centralized at the county level.

Ivey was elected in 2012. In 2013, BCSO adopted a vascular restraint policy. As in permitting the use of it, not adopting an anti-vascular restraint policy. This is the only law enforcement agency in central Florida that permits the use of vascular restraint. They excuse it by having training requirements. Sigh.

In December 2018, a combat medic veteran died while in the custody of the Brevard County Detection Center, which operates under the BCSO. Ivey has refused to release video of the incident.

Our Emergency Operations Director resigned quite recently. Before her resignation even made the news according to the news reports, Ivey had already approached the county commission for Emergency Operations to report to the BCSO. This will undoubtedly come to pass based on an email interaction I had with the one commissioner who bothered to reply to me.

Ivey is a Trumpist to the core. He is a gun fetishist. He sincerely believes the solution to gun violence is to saturate our communities with even more guns.

He is the type of person who should never have this degree of authority and power, and he is gaining more. He is running unopposed for re-election this year and I believe it may be too late for an opponent to qualify for the ballot. He's not going away any time soon.

On a side note, the FOP moron's kid graduated with one of mine and they attend the same university. According to my son, his son is a progressive. Hurray for hearing about apples who do fall far from the tree. A little good news in this dark spot I suppose.

He likes to humiliate and belittle prisoners while walking a thin line between incarceration and outright torture. He's been around in Polk county for a long time, I'm in Hillsborough, we just watch in disgust from here.
That said, they would get along famously. Judd has every piece of military weaponry that Homeland Security will send his way... I'm sure they could spend months just comparing their guns.
