His entire shtick is a reality TV show Presidency, (or dictatorship, depending on how deeply you are looking). In light of that, he test markets ways to keep both sides of the audience engaged and that is the most important point, above and beyond the repetitious nature of the Hitler/Goebbels-style BIG LIE. He is always looking for a hit or something to stick or at least move and shake the body politic.
That's why a day does not go by without a Trumptrusion of some sort. There was a time when a President was not the main focus on a daily basis for his own sake.
Here is another important aspect of his "show" and it is being played often and even by his sycophants and the GO-PEE. Sound familiar? He seemed to learn the tactic well from his tyrant gurus who also chopped up their populations with divisive actions and talk even after giving unity speeches:
